The Writer and His Poses
—May Sarton
You must be fearless.
Confront
Physical threats,
Risk
Being vulnerable—
Exposing your psyche,
And your emotions.
But you do it
To be authentic;
To write something
Raw and seemingly foolish,
Close to real genius.
No one can be you
Because no one
Would want to.
You appear so weak
And sensitive
It’s embarrassing—
It really is...
And it’s also
Your unmistakable voice,
Your essence.
It’s a gift
And a calling
And breathtakingly real,
You wouldn’t trade it
For strong silence
Or audience appeal
Although you once did
And still regret
The stench of bad faith
And how it made you feel.
