Interstice

The pyre burns and its flame
                                    reaches for the heavens,
while a dark track of smoke
comes from the exhaust pipe of the car
to define the whiteness of my page,
the mist above the Nordic ocean.

...
As I wait for a fifth passenger,
the deceased ring-giver burns.
For two slow hours now, he’s been
fighting descendants of Cain
and killing a dragon
(and my time).

I turn the page,
and there’s morning dew
and mourning and moaning.
My eyes sway between Vikings
and a hungry child come out of the blue.
—Got anything to eat?

An engine starts.
—Hey, miss?
(The passenger is here.)
—Got anything left?

The king’s soul grabs the string of smoke
and streams along with the ascending air.

And we’ve parted now, gone on another journey.
I cling to his form, pretending my own existence,
this time out of my book.

                          —Got anything, miss?
                                                    ...
I look him in the eye,
                                                    and he has no idea...

A Personal Comment:

"Interstice" is a poem born from my need to pause everything and get myself into my old hard copy of a most famous British epic, while I wait for a car. It's been two hours of wait before I can finally get in the car and then try to get out of my fictions.

Thanks for reading.

See you tomorrow with another poem.

Saludos.
