SILENT BIRDS
They gorge on blood and flesh.
Guns have sung for too long
And the moon is pale behind the dust
Raised by falling bullet shells and tears.
Mosquitoes buzz sporadic like the
Fading gunfire of dying boys;
Black eyes, dead fish eyes,
Staring blank at the upturned earth.
Drink wine to stupor, victor.
Drink tears to stupor, vanquished.
Tell no one of dreams at the wee hours.
Tell no one of trauma and shot nerves.
After war, the birds are silent.
It will shine on the living and
On the women frozen with drying tears.
The white foam of the trembling surf
Will wash clean, pebbles that glitter
Under the silver light of the new moon.
It will wash clean, bodies that bob
Under the greyish dawn of the new day.
We do not know if they would
Carry the stories we have to tell
Back into the sea or get picked
By little men finding their way home.
We have never tried this before.
Soft and sweet like cotton candy.
From our bodies will come songs
That will fill us back with memories.
We will swell and burst, letting out
Birds with throats full with songs.
Old scuffed boots fool no one
If the reek of blood is new
But silence shush us and we become
Moths flitting from window to sleep
On the wet wax slipping from the
Fluttering eyelids of the dying candle
Set to show the path to the shore,
To the place where there's war no more.
