Opinion – Insatiable Appetite for State Control May Lead to a Solution

We live in interesting times. It is claimed that we’re in the greatest period of freedom known to human existence, and even more so in the greatest nation on Earth; the land of the free – where equal opportunity and what not abounds. It all sounds pleasant until an in-depth look into the very nature of our freedom is examined. The whole concept of a democratic system is increasingly being questioned in my view. It was meant to be a system where the majority of the people get to decide what they want for their communities through the governments they put in power. All this being done while not ignoring the importance of the vocal minority having an opinion.

It seems we are increasingly being accustomed to government overreach in the name of ‘protection’ or knowing what is best for the majority of people. Citizens are losing rights to basic expressions as humans and certain actions are now considered privileges. The abuse of Free speech and family rights by the system may be the bulk of my discussions but it is the tip of the iceberg. It is evident that the current system has perhaps reached a ‘tipping point’ that requires an overhaul.

Asking the Government nicely to stop abusing our rights and privileges as people has not worked, and perhaps never will - neither will violence. To get that systemic change it may just have to come from within. Whatever stretches and stretches is ultimately going to be cut or slack and the same rules apply here. Certain actions may have to come from within that provokes that seismic shift. The way I see it, an error in the current power stretch may set the tone for change.

Take for instance, more media coverage when a family is accused wrongly, or when the government unfairly prosecutes people perceived exercising their rights. This unintended internal action may just set the trigger to get more people involved, speaking against it and eventually actions taken through an exercise of democratic voting rights or a people led legislation push. I believe if things continue the way they are, there would eventually be an opening for the people to seize.

That’s not to say we must be docile while hoping for a slip up. All freedom lovers simply need to be at alert for when the opportunity presents itself.
