From Brexit to Democrexit

in #politics5 years ago

Brexit is a very interesting topic to study democracy in practice. An important decision was taken based on a single vote of the electorate, supported only by a small minority. A lot of people are angry and feel that they have to suffer the consequences from a decision they strongly oppose... and this is exactly true.

Many are upset and focus their anger on the opposing political side or demand not well thought through fixes within democracy. But the fundamental building block of democracy, enforcing majority decisions on everyone, is rarely questioned.

Below some protesters and what they get wrong (or right).

Yes that is exactly the case. In democracies other people decide for you and you have to shut up and accept the consequences. While other forms of government may suck even more, democracy is far from being acceptable.

Final Say

The decision was made at one single point in time, but will affect future generations, people that right now become eligible to vote and people that move to the UK. It counts the votes of people that have already died or are no longer living there. There is no entity called the population, the people in the UK are dynamically evolving and reflect an ever changing mix of opinions.

Should there be one referendum, two, ten; there really is no logical answer to that question. Democracy treats the whole population as one organism, that carries its will through generations. But that is simply wrong. The reality is far more complex that democracy.

Guess what.. Politicians lie. The have been doing that since the beginning of time. It seems we should rethink our form of human organisation then..... But no, lets simply demand that we have a new election where now magically nobody will lie and noting but truth will guide the votes.

We are 52%, we have the right to rule you

In private if we suggest something and only 52% of our friends like it, is that a success? No, we go home ashamed and try to make a better plan. But in politics the people go out and proudly demonstrate their victory.

If your plan got 52% support than either rip it up and go back to the drawing board or take these 52% and do it leaving the rest alone. This is what democrats do not understand. It is not okay to force people, not on a 90% vote and definitely not on a 52% one.

I dont leave

Finally the demonstrator I like the most. Not trying to tell others what to do, not talking for others. Simple message, empowering himself and questioning the authority of politics to decide if we leave or not.
