A Purple Heart for Peter Stzrok

in #politics6 years ago

During the recent testimony of Peter Strzok of the FBI many Democratic members of Congress came to Mr. Strzok's defense. Representative Steve Cohen from the 9th District of Tennessee made the point that Mr. Strzok deserved a purple heart for the treatment he had received during his testimony. After receiving some backlash over comparing questioning during testimony to being wounded in battle, Rep. Cohen quickly clarified is statement in a press release.

With the comment about the purple heart, I was curious about Rep. Cohen's military background, here's what I found:

(Imagine cricket sounds here)

There's nothing wrong with not serving in the military, I didn't either. But then again, I don't go around telling people they deserve a purple heart for receiving some well deserved questioning.

Part of the grilling received by Mr. Strzok centered around his bias against President Trump and whether it impacted his part in the investigations into potential Trump-Russia collusion and the investigation into Hillary Clinton's handling of top secret emails. Rep. Cohen's bias is also evident. In another press release concerning the rational for Mr. Strzok's testimony the following statement was made:

And the truth is this is the most corrupt administration ever and it’s going to be exposed by Robert Mueller, thank God.

Although he doesn't explicitly specify the Trump administration, it's clear that is the administration he is talking about. Rep. Cohen has even gone so far as to draw up articles of impeachment against President Trump and provided a link to the document in a press release. On December 18, 2017 Rep. Cohen introduced bill H.R. 4669: Special Counsel Integrity Act protecting special counsels from being removed that were appointed on or after May 17, 2017, the day Robert Mueller was appointed. Mr. Strzok certainly had at least one Congressman in his corner during the testimony.

The 9th District of Tennessee, Rep. Cohen's district, is basically Memphis, Tennessee. Rep. Cohen has represented this district since January of 2007, he's in his twelfth year. Memphis enjoys a low cost of living but has unemployment higher than both the Tennessee and national averages and incomes are low. But the major problem with Memphis is the crime rate. Here are some crime statistics for Memphis, Nashville, Tennessee, and the nation based on incidents per 100,000 people:

StatisticMemphisNashvilleTennesseeNationally
Total Crime7,4554,7993,4872,837
Violent Crime1,8201,102633386
Property Crime5,6353,6972,8542,451

You can see that crime rates in Memphis about one and a half times the rates in Nashville, TN and even higher when compared to the Tennessee and national averages. To put these numbers in perspective, if you life in Memphis and get together with 13 or 14 friends chances are that one of you during the year will be a victim of some kind of crime. Being a concealed carry permit holder that has reciprocity in Tennessee, I do exercise my second amendment rights when driving through.

With crime rates like this in his district, I would think Rep. Cohen would be focused on helping his constituents by generating laws helping urban crime issues. In his time as a representative, Rep. Cohen has been the major sponsor of five bills that became law, remember he is in his twelfth year as a representative. Two of these bills rename buildings in Memphis and two others extended another law that had nothing to do with urban crime. The fifth dealt with people charged with libel in foreign countries. In over eleven years, Rep. Cohen has not authored a single bill that became law to aid one of the major problems of his constituents.

Far be it from me to try to tell the people of Memphis who to vote for, but I do think they can do better than Rep. Steve Cohen. By the way, Rep. Cohen is up for re-election this year.

We watched a minute portion of the testimony.

As it was total BS to begin with, it only got worse. I can't get passed the fact these two professionaks acted like children.

He and Ms. Lover were dumb enough to put their comments in writing to impress each other, wasted government time, undermine their work, disgrace the agency but hey, lets let them explain themselves. Take more time and money. Certainly nothing more important going on in the world.

Trump is out there representimg us, making changes, making a difference and these guys put in day asking questions we know the answers to.

I can figure it out.....they hate Trump and were working agsinst him and for Clinton.

The fact that they put all these texts in a system they both knew saved everything either shows just how arrogant they are or just how stupid they are. I'm betting a bit of each.

Cohen....Hmmm.....Have NEVER known a good one, politician or otherwise. Former U.S. Senator William S. Cohen (Trilateral commission original) of Maine, was a horrible politician too (and much worse,--which I can't put into writing, publicily.)

You may have noticed I don't think much of him.

I hope you saw the post on where the sun goes down. You got a mention.

You don't think much of which Cohen?

I'll look....

Steve Cohen from Tennessee.

Right..ok...they seem to be everywhere in government.

We need a huge toilet to flush them out.
