GREECE IN INTERNATIONAL SECURITY UNDERSTANDINGS
Greece country is in southeast Europe region.It declared that its independence in 1821. It was member of NATO(North atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1952 and it was member of European Union in 1981. Its population is around 11 millions. Greece has a lot of relations with its neighbour Turkey since history. Also, there is insecurity situation in between these two countries. History created this insecurity situation.So, according to Greece, Turkey is the greatest threat in region.
In this essay, I will talk about threat sectors of greece in international security. If we look to understanding international security of greece, we can see threat detections in five different sectors. Firstly, Greece is ‘’unit’’ actor in levels of security. Now we can look threat detections of greece in military sector of international security understanding.
As we know military issues are big problem between Turkey and Greece. Especially, Turkey and Greece see big threat each other for military sector in the region. In addition to ‘’security dillemma’’ concept comes with it. According to this concept, if one country increase its power of army, number of soldiers, the other country increase same things against the other country. So, if Turkey make a strong its army, increase its number of soldiers, buy technological weapons from other countries, there is a military threat detection for Greece. Turkey applies to this situation in the same way. For example, Turkey signed agreement for F-35 new generation of fighter aircraft with U.S,England,Italy,Holland,Canada,Australia,Norway and Denmark in 2007. Turkish armed forces will use F-35 fighter aircraft after 2014. Thus, these aircrafts will be the most important weapons system of Turkey until 2050.Greece does not join this project. So, greece will detect threat this development of Turkey in next years.
Now, we can look logic of threats of Greece in military sector.(military capabilities,Geography,history,politics).Greece has powerful army in its region.Greece has not strategical depth. If we look historical background, especially it lived hostile relations with Turkey.Also, in Barry Buzan security book, we can see this sentence with interested it; ‘’Poland has long historical suspicions of Germany and Russia, Korea and China of Japan, Vietnam of China, Greece and Armenia of Turkey, and Iraq and Iran of each other.’’ So, it detects that turkey is threat with based on its historical background. Greece adopts capitalism ideology in politics. It shares common global values with Turkey. As we see they are member of NATO and they share common values. But these things dont change perception of threat of Greece and always Turkey is first threat phenomenon for Greece.
If we look economic security politics of greece, we see that free liberal economic structure is there. Especially free trade and tourism are very important for greece economy. ‘’Limited intervention’’ shapes economy of state from liberal approaches. Accordingly, state can intervene to economy if there is crisis and if economy need to reform and arrangement. This intervention must be until finish the crisis. If state intervene economy when there is not crisis, this intervention changes to threat against its economic security for the present and future. Known as , global economic crisis affected a lot of countries over the world badly and bad conditions were dominant over them. This crisis affected greece economy too. So, this global disaster is threat against economy of Greece.
Understanding of the social security; society shares same values with state. So, common conscious is important in social security. In here, society means that people who comes together around common conscious. As we know some minority groups are in Greece country. These are; macedonian,albanian,turks etc. These communities share values of their among them. In addition, big population minorities spread cultures of them in their region. Especially if we think turks, around 140 thousands turks live in west thrace. So, this spreading of culture and values can be problem for present and next years. Especially these turks are threat against common conscious of social security understanding of Greece. Also, increasing of population of this minority every year, it will be more bigger threat point against greece in future years. In addition, these minorities will want more rights and new right demands from greece, this situation will be threat against social structure of greece.
The other security understanding is political security. It means that security of political institutions of state. Basic subject and focusing is state institutions and integration of these institutions. Demolish to this structure is threat detection. Political threat types are nine. These are ; intentional threat, intentional threat to states on political ideological grounds, Inadvertent unit based threats to states nation vulnerable states, unintentional threats to states on political ideological grounds, security of and against supranational regional integration, systematic principled threats against states that are vulnerable because of nation state split, structural systematic principle threat to the state on political ideologic ground, threats to transnational movements that command supreme loyalty from their numbers and threats to international society, order and law. Intentional threat means that intervention of one country to wholeness of another country. According to it, minorities are threat against political security of greece for nowadays and future 10 years. Alot of minorities live in Greece. Homelands of these minorities can demand right over this country. And there can be intervention to wholeness of Greece too. For example,Turkey will use turkish minority in greece and it will intervene to structure of greece in future. Especially if we think minorities problem between Turkey and Greece, this situation is inevitable. According to intentional threat to states on political ideological grounds, Russia and Greece has some religion.And Russia will use it and it will spread its ideology to Greece in next years. Especially religion plays important role in this subject. As we see, these interventions will be threat against institutional of Greece.
In general meaning, environmental security detects military security at the same time and it explains that concept. There were some threats against environmental security of greece. For example, in Aegean sea beach, factories threaten natural life there and they involve to become dirty of aegean sea. This situation will effect greece tourism in Aegean sea next years.The other subject is global warming. It is threat against natural life and wealth of greece for now and future. Thus, water sources of greece will decrease. Also, according to last researches, 7,5 millions population pollution flows to aegean sea. This pollution will effect to environmental security of Greece and it will change to threat situation next 10 years. The other threat detection to environmental security is forest fires. Especially forest fires increase in summer periods. It is threat against ecological nature of greece. Destroying of forests will increase air pollution and it will lead to impairment of the natural balance in future years at Greece.
