Emily's List...Kinda Sucks

in #politics6 years ago

So Emily's List will only support "Pro-choice, Democratic, Women" candidates. It's a pro-choice advocacy group, so I take no issue with the pro-choice part, obviously. However, only supporting Democrats, and especially only supporting women is a huge problem.

First off, pro-choice Republicans exist, as do pro-life Democrats. In fact, there is a small number of each currently holding office. So Emily's List, since they only support Democrats, would actually sit out a theoretical election where a pro-life Democrat was running against a pro-choice Republican. I will admit it is unlikely, but what if the outcome of that race ends up actually determining women's access to abortion rights? For example, perhaps in the state legislature only a vote or two makes the difference between a 14-week abortion ban being passed or not. Or any number of other anti-abortion laws. Emily's List's decision to sit on the sidelines purely due to party loyalty could end up costing the pro-choice movement dearly.

But even more outrageous is their refusal to ever support pro-choice (Democratic) men. In a theoretical race between the most pro-choice man to have ever lived and a the most pro-life Republican to ever live, Emily's List would sit out that election. There are plenty of close elections for U.S. House and Senate, and even for President. Let alone the hundreds of close races in state legislatures, which are sometimes decided by less than 100 votes. So you could be their ideal candidate on every issue, and in a race that determines whether women keep access to abortion rights or not, and they will let the pro-life side win. Because you have a dick.

Then there are the primaries! Oh my God the primaries. If there is only one woman in a Democratic primary, that woman automatically gets their endorsement as long as she is pro-choice (which nearly all female Democratic politicians are). Talk about a way to divide the party. Endorsing a candidate based on their genitalia in a primary is a horrible strategy electorally, not to mention sexist and unethical. It will just drive a wedge between the party and drive more people away from feminism. This is just about the least pragmatic thing a pro-choice group could do.

Emily's List is not a pro-choice advocacy group, they are a very peculiar and counter-productive type of female and Democratic Party advocacy group.
