Outdoor Portrait For @portraitcontest (and a bit of how-to)

I'm lucky to be one of the few photographers that are allowed (and hired to) shoot the Trails and Vistas annual art hike every year. The performers and organizers come up with some pretty wild costumes for their performances. Everyone is usually very cooperative with giving me their best pose in an incredibly beautiful location somewhere in the Tahoe area.

This shot is from last year's event. This year's Trails and Vistas will be held on September 8th and 9th on Donner Summit. Tickets and more info can be found Here

The @portraitcontest theme this week is Outdoor Portraits and is being judged by @vtravels. I thought this would be a nice entry since the Trails and Vistas performers appear to be part of the outdoors. Large granite boulders and pine trees are very common around here. Seeing two lovely ladies dressed up as a boulder and a tree... not so common haha!

This was shot with a Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens set at 24mm. When I shoot this event, I always have two cameras around my neck, no tripod, and I have to work fast. I normally like to shoot with a manual exposure but in those conditions, I like to use the shutter speed priority mode with the shutter set at 1/200 second. The ISO was set at 400. In shutter speed priority mode, the camera automatically chooses the the best aperture for the other setting, and at this scene it was f11. A Canon 580EX II flash was used as a "fill flash" in order to lighten up the shadows a bit and create a less contrasty, more balanced light look to the "people". In the contest info, @vtravels states that she will be looking for "use of natural light, or the use of artificial light to enhance the surroundings." This is a bit of both.

What are the first thoughts that come to your mind when you see this outdoor portrait?

Wow! That's wild! Lovely how you get them to blend into the natural surroundings! Thanks for sharing!

No problem and thank you @porters! Glad you like that one.

That's amazing....I had to enlarge the photo to see if the woman in the rear was real or made of wood and other materials. Great make up - I was totally fooled. Sounds like an interesting event.

Good luck with this contest....I love this one.

Thank you @countrygirl!!! Yeah, they go all out with the makeup and costumes for the event. It's always one of my favorite photoshoots of the year.
