Grass Jelly Ice (Es Campur) - Ramadan Day 4 and 5

TGIF Friends :D

It's long weekend for us here, well not for my husband, just for the kids, but still, long weekend, woo-hoo :D

Back with my 30 Days of Indonesia, through food, project, where just like in 2018, when it was fasting month of Ramadan, I would share daily Indonesian recipe, especially sweets, desserts, and drinks.

I encourage those who are fasting, who are in Indonesia or other countries and are familiar with this holy month, to tag their whatever post as long as they are related to Ramadan, with #ramadan-tkf. I will swing by their articles and give a little vote :)

Today is Day 5 in Canada (Day 6 already in Indonesia), and yesterday and this evening, I had and will have donuts :P

My husband got the boys a big box of donuts and I had and also saved a couple yesterday and for this eve.

Soooo, that being said, for Day 4 (yesterday) and Day 5 (today), I am sharing this, Indonesian ice dessert called Es Campur

Inside this ice dessert I had grass jelly, toddy palm fruit, white kidney beans, basil seeds, and cendol (green goodies made of rice flour). They all combined and then served chilled or with ice along with palm sugar syrup and salted coconut milk.

This ice dessert is perfect for summer and excellent for gatherings :)

Hai Teman!

  • 1 can white kidney beans, rinse (forgot to take a pic!)
  • 1 can grass jelly, rinsed, cubed
  • 1 can toddy palm fruit in heavy syrup, do NOT rinse
  • 1/3 c basil seeds, soaked in enough water to cover it, set aside to bloom
  • cendol, recipe bellow!
  • ice cubes or shaved ice
  • 1 kaleng kacang putih (kalau ga ada yah kacang merah), siap pakai, cuci bersih
  • 1 kaleng cincau siap pakai, cuci, potong dadu
  • 1 kaleng kolang-kaling manis, jangan dicuci
  • 1/3 gelas selasih, rendam di air dingin hingga mengembang, sisihkan
  • cendol, resep dibawah yak!

Cendol

  • 1 pouch agar-agar powder
  • 5 tbsp rice flour
  • 500 ml water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp pandan paste (it's green, if you use pandan extract, add food coloring as cendol is normally green or pink)
  • a large bowl of icy water
  • potato ricer/masher
  • Mix all ingredients and bring to a boil, mixture will thickened
  • Pour into ricer and push onto icy water

Cendol

  • 1 bungkus agar-agar
  • 5 sdm tepung beras
  • 500 ml air
  • 2 sdm gula pasir
  • 1 sdm pasta pandan
  • air es
  • cetakan cendol
  • Rebus seluruh bahan hingga meletup-letup
  • Tuang pada cetakan cendol dan tekan diatas air es

Coconut Milk

  • 3 cans of coconut milk
  • 2 screwpine leaves, tied in knot
  • a pinch of salt
  • Bring to boil, cool to room temperature

Sugar Syurp

  • 2 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 screwpine leaves, tied in knot
  • a pinch of salt
  • Bring to boil, set aside to cool to room tempt

Santan

  • 3 kaleng santan siap pakai
  • 2 daun pandan, ikat simpul
  • sejumput garam
  • Rebus sambil diaduk, dinginkan suhu ruangan

Gula Merah

  • 2 1/2 gelas gula merah
  • 2 daun pandan, ikat simpul
  • sejumput garam
  • Rebus, dinginkan suhu ruangan

So to serve, place everything in a very large bowl or container, mix to combine, then add tons of ice cubes to chill the dessert :D

Spoon into serving cups and treat yourself with this awesome ice dessert which you can find almost in any South East Asian countries by the way, with other varieties of fillings. So, so good :D

See you tomorrow for Day 6 :D

Oke deh teman segini dulu yak.

Bahan-bahan diatas tinggal di satukan di wadah yang bueeesaaaar, aduk biar tercampur, dan beri es batu yang buanyak biar dingin.

Joss banget deh buat buka puasa rame-rame :D

Jangan lupa gunakan tagar #ramadan-tkf, dan akan aku kunjungi :D

Sort:

that is a wild recipe I would love to taste it.

fresh and sweet and all over goodness

it was a hit at the gathering, even amongst the Westerners, but of course, they are married to Indonesians or have lived in Indonesia before, so they know this ice dessert already :D

Ahh...so thats how cendol are made..

Posted using Partiko Android

many ways to make them, but the main ingredient is always rice flour

for the past couple of years tho, people mix in either agar-agar or jelly powder to speed up the process :)

If your my neighbor i would have taken cooking lesson from you! so many delicious food u have😋😋😋

Don't know if my family only had the cendol or if they called the whole thing cendol, that was the name I recognised :)

this is Es Campur, literally translated to mixed ice, so they put whatever inside :) When served with shaved ice AND condensed milk, it will be called Es Teler

Es cendol, is only the green stuff, with coconut milk and syrup

Nothing like homemade cincau! Enjoy Ramadan..

I'm seriously considering making my own kombucha, I seem to recall you also make kombucha?

Buying a, starter kit online scoby seems like my best bet. Any advice is welcomed TQ

didnt make the cincau :( no cincau plants here, would love to make myself

made the green stuff, cendol :)

cincau is the black grass jelly

thank you!

and no, never made kombucha, scared to even try as i read its not that simple, wrong fungi can grow

i did try drinking, and it hurt my tummy

do you like it?

Ahh ok I see, a nice icy cendol is a great treat on a hot day.

I think with kombucha similar to beer sterilization is the key. I love the drink. It’s everywhere in every flavour imaginable where I’m from in the states. Here in Malaysia it’s less common, and pretty expensive so I’m looking to give it a try. I’ve found starter kits online so I’ll do some more research and let you know how it goes.

Terima kasih
