Why bring your dreams into reality with or without closure

in #productivity6 years ago (edited)

Something happens when you realize closure; you can let go and learn to accept there is no reward for dwelling on the past for too long.

In the case of our dreams, the backward way of thinking can also be detrimental while it certainly disables any tendency to look forward. For this reason, the cognitive closure principle is sometimes the missing link for ambitious minds and one who can channel uncertainty and doubt in an entirely different direction.

In case you might be asking yourself, the cognitive closure principle refers to a persons need or desire for an answer to a particular question. That is to say, closure is a move away from uncertainty and closer to a place in which the individual can take a more realistic or practical outlook.

The Problem with Uncertainty and Ambiguity:

As you may know, uncertainty, in general, is an uncomfortable feeling. While uncertainty can be a cause for delight or accentuate well-natured surprises, this is often an emotion which most people wish to avoid.

In the case of your dreams, uncertainty can sometimes compel a person to push forward with their goals but for the above reason, it is more likely that these feelings will bring little more than self-doubt and moments of unnecessary hardship.

In fact, ambiguity puts people on alert and it can stay this way until a rational solution to the challenge has presented itself. Needless to say, these emotions will subside upon discovering a solution and this is why closure will usually bring peace of mind to the affected person.

Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of such tension is the human tendency to seek a resolution as fast as possible. While this is sometimes effective, rational thought is often the product of taking sufficient time to assess any situation.

We can see this is common in every instance of uncertainty. For example, when watching a crime series on television, the viewer is eager to know the culprit and without this knowledge, the viewer is unable to feel at ease or satisfied with the story.

On a more serious note, when a person is suffering from an illness for a particularly long time, death can feel like the closure needed for family and friends to look forward with renewed perspective.

As for your dreams, the cognitive closure principle is an opportunity to feel empowered and a reason to remain optimistic throughout even the most uncertain of times.

Acknowledging Uncertainty and Avoiding Sabotage:

With this in mind, the first thing to remember about uncertainty is that it exists. That is to say, we should fully expect these moments of hardship and adversity on whatever path we choose to take on.

After all, it is often said that "easy" is rarely worthwhile and anything of true value is sure to evoke unexpected scenarios and particularly unsavory emotions.

Whether you work as a creator or a designer, maybe an artist or entrepreneur; your dreams are a pre-requisite for an end outcome. In this sense, without having clear aspirations or a specific sense of purpose, the prospect of reaching any objective can seem unlikely.

When you consider the sense of ambiguity that can come with having no outline or plan for what you want to do, we should also understand that uncertainty can cause confusion that it can even sabotage our dreams.

Grappling with Uncertainty and Dreaming of Reality:

The truth is, awareness is a key factor and something which will usually define the outcome of specific circumstances.
When faced with difficult tasks and especially adverse times, it is important that the person remains aware that the potential outcome is based on how they react to the situation. After all, when an individual can avoid unnecessary thoughts and stay present, there is inevitably a greater chance that they will take a more rational approach which will also be more productive.

In many ways, grappling with uncertainty is an inherent part of being human and so creating a sacred space for our own awareness, development, and strive for improvement is critical to maintaining our focus on the end result.

In this sense, it would seem that our preferences are often even more important than our need for closure and how we respond to these moments is the key to bringing our dreams into reality.
