Dear Milkbox Community:

It is a pleasure to present the third edition of «controversial november». We invite you to read the content and participate by leaving your comments, but not before reminding you that there is a New challenge of poetry: in the shoes of a woman who suffers 💔 This fascinating and controversial challenge goes hand in hand with the theme of our debate and, in conjunction with the Loto Azul Foundation; we invite you to learn more about this foundation here and about the activities that they carry out for the defense of the female gender.

Forced sterilization

“The nurse came to my house, then she threatened me saying. If you do not come, then when you have another child, we will not even enroll him. Next time I'll have them come with the police. Listening to that, my husband got scared and signed. Then, I got a surgery out of fear; since then I am invalid”.

Forced sterilization is a violent method that disables the reproductive condition of human beings. Its adjective of forced or compulsory is that it is an act performed against the will. This practice usually lacks a clinical justification, medical reason and root causes in the racial improvement such as eugenics.

Although it is a practice that does not exclude men, women have been the main victims. There are many testimonies, around the world, that indicate the consequences, in some cases, physical and, in most cases, psychological.

If we investigate, we will discover a long history of countries that have implemented this cruel method. In some nations, forced sterilization is categorized as a crime against humanity. Between 1945 and 1946, it was considered a war crime by some countries in the last frame of the Second World War. The United States, Germany, and Japan were among the first countries to launch the practice with eugenics and nationalist motives. Sweden, Switzerland, India and China are also recorded in history as practitioners. Latin America does not escape this count: Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, nations where racial conflicts exist are the main representatives of the forced sterilization of the Hispanic bloc.

Between 1995-2001, 346,219 women and 24,535 men were forcibly sterilized, according to a report by an independent parliamentary commission in 2002. The same national congress in Peru investigated cases of surgical contraception and concluded that 314,605 women were sterilized within the framework of the National Family Planning Program of Alberto Fujimori’s government.

In rural communities of Mexico, forced sterilization is an open secret. This practice has been denounced by civil society organizations for decades, with special emphasis during the administration of Ernesto Zedillo; However, it was not until the end of 2001 when the issue escalated in public opinion that it attracted national and international attention.

Knowing the above, the questions corresponding to this debate are the following:

  • Japan, the United States and especially Germany, implemented this practice with the intention of avoiding the spread of hereditary health problems: disabilities, mental retardation, compromising genetic conditions. In this way, improving the health status of their breeds. Do you think that, in this sense, it is correct? How do you see it from the ethical-moral point of view?
  • In countries such as Mexico and Peru, it has been tried to persuade some inhabitants to practice sterilization in exchange for food and improvements in health care conditions such as the creation of hospitals. There are women who accept these measures. In this case, can it also be considered forced sterilization?

  • Do you consider it as a crime against humanity?

  • How would you help to achieve the benevolent objectives of these nations without committing this act?

  • Do you think eugenics has a valid reason?

  • Do you think this measure should be applied to both men and women?

  • Suppose you have a relative with some kind of hereditary compromising condition, would you submit them to this method? Taking into account that there is the possibility of reproducing.

  • Do you think this practice is against the rights of women?
