Life Lesson - A Jar, Golf Balls, Pebbles, Sands and Two Cups of Coffee

in #psychology6 years ago

A professor took out a large jar and put it on top of his desk during his philosophy class. When all of his students have entered and had a seat, without saying anything, he started to fill the jar with golf balls. Then he asked his students, "Is the jar is full?", the students responded, "Yes".

He then took out a box full of tiny pebbles and pour it into the jar and shook it till the pebbles could fill in the gaps between the golf balls. "Now, is the jar is full?", he asked, "Yes", his students responded.

The professor took another box filled with sands from underneath his table and poured it into the jar and shook it. The sands started to fill up the gaps between the golf balls and the pebbles. "Is the jar is full?", he asked, and his students responded "Yes".

Finally, the professor poured two cups of coffee into the jar and it fills up in between the microscopic gaps of the sands. The professor asked his students, "Is the jar thoroughly full now?", his students laughed and said "Yes".

"Now, I want all of you to imagine that this jar is your life. The golf balls represent the important element in your life, your religion, your family, your children, your health, and your friends. The pebbles represent your job, your house, and your car, while the sands represent other minor things such as your hobbies and interest", said the professor.

"If you filled up the jar with sands first, there will be no place for the golf balls and the pebbles. You will use up most of your time to do unnecessary things while neglecting the other important elements in your life. Spend more time with your family, take care of your health and take your partner out for dinner. Spend lesser times on your hobbies or cleaning up the house, you will have more time to do it later. Spend your time wisely for the most important thing first, that you know will provide you a happy and harmonious life", the professor explained.

One of the student put up his hands, and asked, "What about the 2 cups of coffee?". The professor smiled and then he said, "I'm so glad that you asked me that question, it means, no matter how busy our life and our schedules are, always makes sure that you have the time to have one or two cups of coffee with your friends".

That's a great lesson. No matter how busy we are with our life, work, we definitely should find the time for ourselves, to spend with friends and family, and to enjoy in order to protect ourselves from depression and burnout.
