“100 Punks” Playlist by Richard F. Yates

This playlist is inspired by the quick burst of sunshine I see through my window today, and by the CryptoPunks crypto-art project, and by punk music in general, which I discovered back in the late 1980s when I was a skater-waver. Technically, I was more of a Cure, Depeche Mode, OMD, Echo & the Bunnymen, Erasure, type of guy, back when I was smashing myself to pieces on half-pipes and ruining my wrists and knees. However, everything changed for me when I heard the song “Submission” by the Sex Pistols; a friend brought his Never Mind the Bullocks record over and played it for me, and I went, “That’s not bad! What else you got?” In short order, I’d absorbed Public Image Ltd., Subhumans, Crass, Bad Brains, Dead Milkmen, Misfits, and a few others. And then, in 1993, Rhino Records released a series of compilations, called “D.I.Y.,” which packaged certain regional sounds together: U.K. Punk 1 & 2, the New York scene, the L.A. scene, etc… And the world exploded for me! Suddenly, I found myself listening to X-Ray Spex, the Germs, Television, Wire, the Rezillos, X, the Weirdos, and a slug of other “foundational” punk performers…

The rest, as they say, is history. I was hooked, and I like to DIG DEEP when I’m hooked on something. So here we have a selection of punk, post-punk, and punk inspired tracks, just under five hours worth of tunes, that I think most punky-types will enjoy. Some of the songs might not seem THAT punk to everyone, but there is at least a tenuous connection, if not a direct sonic reason for each entry in this list. (For instance, most folks probably think of Ministry as either an industrial band or as some kind of hybrid-metal outfit, but Al Jourgensen has worked with Jello Biafra---from Dead Kennedys---on the band Lard, while Gibby Haynes---from Butthole Surfers---did guest vocals for the Ministry cut “Jesus Built My Hotrod,” and Ian MacKaye---from Minor Threat and Fugazi---collabrated with Jourgensen in Pailhead. Jourgensen also hired Martin Atkins---from Public Image Ltd. and Killing Joke---as a drummer for Ministry for several albums and a couple of tours. Personally, my favorite Ministry album is still the synth-pop, disco classic, With Sympathy, but Ministry still, certainly, belongs on any tangential punk accounting…if you ask me! Especially the brutal track, “Stigmata,” which is certainly punk-inspired if not directly punk itself…)

Anyway, to listen to the playlist go HERE! It's hosted at 8tracks and free to listen to!

And that, as they say, is THAT! This list could have been 200 or 300 tracks long, and I’m pretty sure it would have felt the same as it does now. FUN! Up-beat! Rebellious! (Maybe I’ll do another one some day…) And if you don’t LIKE my list, make one yourself!!!

As Don Letts, who directed the fantastic 2005 documentary, Punk: Attitude, expressed in his film: Punk isn’t a specific sound---it’s a FEELING. Whether you’re listening to New York trippy punk, like Television, or a Scottish Oi! band, like Exploited, or the synthpunk madness of bands like S.F.’s The Screamers or Akron, Ohio’s Devo…oh SHOOT! I forgot to put a track by The Rezillos on the list!!!---anyway, none of these bands sound the same, but they all express an altered view of society and society’s rules. They are doing it for themselves, and they expect you’ll do the same! Get up, off the couch, and grab an instrument. Make some unholy noise, tell your story, doesn’t matter if you’re GOOD or not. Just DO something! (I’m still trying to do something…although I’m doing it slower and slower every year! Ha!!! Grey haired punks unite!!! Or, whatever…)

Sort:

Made sure Code Blue was there. List checks out.

If this list had just 35 seconds more to spare, one of the most punk punk songs ever, The Descendents Coffee Mug

Ha! Yeah, I missed a lot! No Suicidal Tendencies, no Circle Jerks, no Rezillos, no Dils, no Subway Sect, no Dayglo Abortions, no JFA, no Descendants... I try to work fast, otherwise I'll agonize about what to include and never finish. There will be other playlists, of course.
