"It rained cats and dogs"

No one knows the precise source of this 17th century expression "it rained cats and dogs", but we can be sure that it didn't originate because animals fell from the sky.
However, this old English phrase is being used to describe when it rains very heavily.
Yesteryears, it was common to hear people say it rained cats and dogs but over the past few years, rain fall has drastically changed from just raining heavily to raining very very heavily with thunderstorms, hail stones and lots of violence. Rains now our days are fierce and have left a lot of destruction to to people and property.
I think the cats and dogs have grown to Rhinos and Elephants and perhaps this explains why rainfall nowadays is very fierce and violent. But why?
