Popiah DIY Way // Gotto Have Fun Wrap 'Em All

in #qurator5 years ago (edited)

Once in a while, my mother-in-law would organise an eating-outing together for a popiah feast. When she mentioned it, we would all be super duper excited because we all love her popiah, passed down from her ancestors' side, the Penanglites. If you know Penang, it is a food heaven, tourists stomped to this island for food. And food. And food.

We counted ourselves privilege to have chance to savour Penang popiah with a home twist. Popiah is basically a spring roll using a paper-thin like pancake made of wheat flour. The ingredients — you can literally wrap anything you want, ranges from beans to vegetables to meat to prawns.

Look at the spread of ingredients, wow wow! This photo is also for my entry to Qurator's Tasty Tuesday Competition #87

You gotto fall in love with a feast like this when you needed to stand up and walk from plate to plate to scoop the ingredients one by one for your own spring roll. And you could do it your own way, your own style. You could spread however much chilli sauce you like, add however much amount of meat or eggs you like.

Let me show you the close-up look of each ingredient from my mother-in-law. She usually took the whole day since morning to prepare all the ingredients to be ready for dinner! Phew!

The Must-Have Sauce

This is signature chilli sauce and the shrimp paste, usually the first layer we spreaded on our thin spring roll.

Lettuce

MIL prepared this in view of some who loved lettuce wrap instead of spring roll wrap. Plus, it can be one of the ingredients in the spring roll too.

Stir Fry Turnip Her Way

This, our all-time favourite. Stir fry shredded turnip with some cut pork belly and small shrimps and dried cuttlefish. The spring rolls were delicious enough just with this ingredients.

Pork Belly & Omelette

Put alot of these two ingredients and you had a protein-packed popiah. Super duper yummy! Just imagine each bite, your tastebuds were being tickled by the tasty stir fry turnips and then you get to taste the meat and omelette in each yummy bite. I am drooling typing this.

The Vegetables Pack

A spring roll was not complete without vegetables. These were bean sprouts, cucumber and parsley. Add these on the last layer and the taste became 100% complete.

Then, you carefully rolled up, wrapping all the ingredients in the thin-layer pancake! Tada!

Even my eldest who were not so adventurous with food could easily walloped two huge popiah. I could eat 4. My husband could eat 10!!! I am not kidding!!!

The best part was, we could happily spend time together, talking about who could wrap better, because some wrapped then the spring roll tore apart, leaving the ingredients all on the plate. Haha! Some spring rolls wrap were thin, some were thick and super greedy fat. It was fun eating popiah together at home, DIY way!

Do you think you will like this popiah moment too?

Oh man... I missed having this homemade popiah, we as a kid used to help do all the preparations, now everyone complain too much work to do it at home now... hehehe

I never did the preps before as a kid. We always ate out. Until I knew my mother-in-law then I realised how tedious the preps is. But she did it anyway!!! And waited for us to enjoy.

Oh... Now I am hungry haha.

Yup, lots of hard work just to prepare for this... Haha, I hope you have some left over now!
