There are many legends.
Today I am going to tell you about the three waves.

En este bonito pueblo costero, vivía una bruja.
Esta bruja le gustaba quedarse con lo que no era suyo.
Un día Martín salió a pescar en su barco y la fortuna quiso que la pesca fuese abundante.

In this beautiful coastal town, lived a witch.
This witch liked to keep what was not his.
One day Martin went fishing on his boat and fortune meant that fishing was abundant.

La bruja se acercó a él y le saludo.
Martín le devolvió el saludo.
La bruja le pidió la pesca.
Pero Martín no podía dársela, la necesitaba para alimentar a su familia.
La bruja se fue de mal humos, maldiciendo y enrabietada.
Pidió ayuda a su hermana y sobrina.

The witch approached him and greeted him.
Martin returned the greeting.
The witch asked him to fish.
But Martin could not give it to her, he needed her to feed his family.
The witch went from bad smoke, cursing and enraged.
He asked for help from his sister and niece.

Martín no me ha querido dar su pesca y encima me ha llamado bruja desdentada, mintió la bruja.
Mañana cuando salga a la mar, nos convertiremos en olas.
Pasaba por allí, Tino el amigo de Martín que las oyó.
Le dijo a Martín que no saldría a pescar, que era muy peligroso.
Pero Martín era valiente preparo sus redes y salió a la mar.

Martin did not want to give me his fishing and on top of that he called me a toothless witch, the witch lied.
Tomorrow when it goes out to sea, we will become waves.
I was passing by, Tino Martin's friend who heard them.
He told Martin that he would not go fishing, that it was very dangerous.
But Martin was brave, he prepared his nets and went to sea.

Mar adentro
Sintieron la fuerza del mar.
Tino le grito a Martín, aquí está la primera ola.
Esta levanto el barco pero pudieron sortearla.

They felt the force of the sea.
Tino yelled at Martin, here is the first wave.
This raised the boat but they could get around it.

A los pocos segundos llego la segunda mucho más grande y violenta.
Martín tuvo que agarrar el timón con todas sus fuerzas para que el barco no naufragara.
Pero logro cabalgarla también.

Martin had to grab the rudder with all his strength so that the ship would not be shipwrecked.
But I manage to ride it too.

Cuando estaba sonriendo llego la tercera.
Una ola gigante, en su cresta bailaban la espuma y el viento la hacía infranqueable.
Creían que morirían naufragados en ese mismo instante.

When I was smiling the third arrived.
A giant wave, in its crest danced the foam and the wind made it impassable.
They believed that they would die shipwrecked in that same moment.

Pero entonces Martín Cogió su arpón.
Sin pensarlo lo lanzo al corazón de la ola.
En el mar se oyó un grito terrible y la ola se cubrió de rojo.
Ella desapareció como había a parecido de la nada.

But then Martin picked up his harpoon.
Without thinking I throw it to the heart of the wave.
In the sea there was a terrible scream and the wave was covered in red.
She disappeared as it had seemed from nowhere.

Martín y Tino regresaron al puerto muy contentos por seguir vivos.
Al amanecer apareció una toquilla en la orilla de la playa.
La gente de Bermeo se preguntaba que hacia la toquilla de la bruja fea en la arena.
Nadie sabía nada, pero las dos brujas lloraban y se lamentaban.
Nadie pregunto nada ya que las temían.
Pero a partir de entonces todos los marineros, cuando ven las tres olas las llaman.
Las tres Marías.

Martín and Tino returned to the port very happy to be alive.
At dawn a scarf appeared on the shore of the beach.
The people of Bermeo wondered what to the ugly witch's toquilla in the sand.
Nobody knew anything, but the two witches cried and lamented.
Nobody asked anything since they feared them.
But from then on all the sailors, when they see the three waves, call them.
The three Marias.
