World Radio Day

in #radio5 years ago

The 13th of February every year is set aside as World Radio Day and today happens to be the 13th of February. Lot's of programs have been scheduled to commomerate this day and it's a happy day for those in the radio business but I have just 1 question.

Is Radio Still Relevant In Your Life?

I remember when I was younger, the radio was something I listened to a lot everyday. I wake up to the sound of the radio and go to bed to the sound of the radio. Used to be more of music and entertainment then but seems politics have taken over this days.

The news news on radio these days seem to be a bit biased most times and it's rather difficult to listen to "fair" news. With morning shows growing in popularity, every discussion has been made to have 2 sides. It's either you are for or against the issue being discussed. Almost all panellists on this shows have a stand.

Just a few years ago, the then sitting government wanted to move Senior High School from 3 years to 4 years. The only discussions you would here was, all those in support of the then sitting government were for the 4 years, and the opposition was against the 4 years.

Politicians decided the fate of students on radio and teachers weren't consulted. It took a petition from the Ghana National Association of Teachers requesting to be heard and considered before such a decision was taken. In the end, the 3 years was changed to 4 years and interestingly, as soon as the opposition came into power 4 years later, they changed it back to 3 years.

We had the case of the montie 3 where 3 presenters on a popular radio stationed threatened the chief justice and the supreme court found them guilty and sentenced them to some jail time. You know what happened? The then president ordered for their release, why, because the radio station was unofficially affiliated with his political party. Why would I go and listen to such a radio station?

There are a lot of radio station doing a lot of good work, and they deserve some praises and a few other's making me dislike listening to the radio. I only listen to the radio when there isn't a better option. If I want to listen to music, I go to soundcloud or some other online channel. When I want news, I check it out online. Even social media can get you the news without distortion.

Radio this days is a lot of talk, some advertisements and a few moments of good music. As someone who loves to listen to music, I've lost the use of a radio set and I no longer listen to radio. Do you still listen to radio, and what shows do you listen to?
