Random Japan #70 :: Street Art and More!

in #randomjapan6 years ago (edited)

Hello, you beautiful and amazing readers. Thank you for once again clicking on one of my posts and entering this random journey with me into the plain and ordinary parts of Japan that you are unlikely to see in the typical tourist or sightseeing books.

Today, even more random than usual! Even the photo processing is completely random today. There is no real connecting thread here between the photos, making every photo a surprise!

Ready to dive into it and see what I have in store for you today? Good! Let’s get started. Let’s enter into…

Random Japan!

Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars

Or drive me to the moon, as the case may be. This fantastic painting was on the closed shutter of a sandwich shop.

Abandoned
Abandoned

As I have mentioned several times in the past, abandoned houses here are a bit of a problem.

Watching the world turn is a hobby of introspective photographers.

Ieyasus Hometown
Ieyasu’s Hometown

Okazaki is a smaller town of 360,000. Not small, but not so big. So it’s often overlooked—commonly confused with the Kyoto area of the same name. But history buffs know Okazaki as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man who conquered Japan in 1600 and founded the Tokugawa Shogunate which would rule the country until 1868. Okazaki’s one claim to fame. Because of this, his image is used practically everywhere. By the way, that text says “Ieyasu’s hometown Okazaki”.

Shopping is Always Such a Blur

I hate shopping. Vision blurry… make it stop!

Street Art Faces
Street Art Faces

No one quite knows why, but Audrey Hepburn is extremely popular in Japan, but… she is. Some say it’s because she had an elegant, modest style and a beauty that appealed to Japanese taste. Whatever the case may be, you will find her image everywhere in Japan, including graffiti.

The other face you see in the photo is Henohenomoheji (へのへのもへじ). So named because his face is drawn from the same characters. It’s an easy and therefore popular face for children to draw so you will find it anywhere that might be trying to appeal to kids. A good face for wannabe graffiti artists to draw as well.

Sumo
Sumo

I love sumo. It is problematic in many ways, with many sexist rules. There was a brouhaha recently where a man fainted in the ring and a nurse ran in to help him but was immediately ordered out because she was a woman. …yeah. Yet, I love the sport and keep hoping they modernize one of these days.

Warm Tea
Warm Tea

A few cold nights and already many of the vending machines are putting in the warm drinks. Jumping the gun a bit. But oh well. It is a great convenience to buy a warm drink from the vending machines in winter.

That’s all, folks. Thank you for staying with me through today’s exploration. Any favorites? Let me know in the comments. And me sure to turn in next time when, if providence allows, I shall return for another Random Japan. See you then!
