Sunday Sports Weekly Review Maiden Edition – Expensive Eden Hazard: Good Buy or Nah?

in #realityhubs5 years ago (edited)

The Sunday Sports Weekly Review is a weekly sports review of some of the happenings in the sporting world during the course of the week.

Recently, I came across an article that listed some of the purchases made in this transfer window. And it has Eden Hazard’s purchase as one of the most expensive purchase of the coming season. Recall that Eden Hazard was signed by Chelsea back in 2012 from Lille, a French club and he has so far spent about 7 years with the English side.

On today’s Sunday Sports Weekly Review, we shall be reviewing the decision Real Madrid made in June to buy Eden Hazard for £130 million. Was it a good buy or nah? Will he live up to expectations? Is the price spent on Hazard really worth it? Let’s discuss.

But before we do that, let me pen down some talking points.

  • Hazard was purchased from Lille in 2012 at a price of £32 million, and now, his currently purchase price is 130 million after roughly seven years.
  • He won the UEFA Europa League cup with Chelsea in his first season with the Club.
  • During his stint with Chelsea, he also won the Premier League cup twice.
  • In his entire career, he so far has a total of 160 goals as against an appearance total of 546
  • Hazard was 21 back in 2012 when he moved to Chelsea from Lille. Moving to Real Madrid, he’s currently 28 which makes him quite young.

Starting the 2019/20 season with Real Madrid

The new season is underway already having begun on 10th of August 2019. However, on the 6th of August, Hazard opened up his scoring with the Spanish side when he scored the only goal in their friendly against RB Salzburg. This has shown that he is ready to take on the Spanish League. Hopefully, he can bring Real Madrid to win the League Title this year thus unsettling Barcelona.

My take on Eden Hazard’s purchase

Over the last season, Hazard showed himself off as a prolific player, setting off the chain of reactions that saw him move out of the English side club. At the beginning of the season, he scored the penalty that saw them win 2-1 against Newcastle. Out of 37 appearances in the Premier League, he scored 16 goals.

In the finals of the Europa League games against Arsenal, Hazard scored 2 goals. He equally gave the assist that saw Pedro score a goal as they thrashed their rivals 4-1 to claim the trophy. It was after the win that Hazard made the suggestion that the game was likely his last for the Blues

On the International scene, Hazard has been quite prolific as well. At the start of the 2018 FIFA world cup, he was appointed captain of the Belgium side. There, he scored three goals, gave two assists, won the Man of the Match award three times, and ended as the second best player of the tournament. This saw him go home with the Silver ball.

We can see that the 2018/2019 season was a very special one for the Belgian player. For me, I believe he became a better improved player within this period and he is set to become an even exceptional one with the move to Real Madrid. Once he can be managed properly, there’s no limit to what he would be able to achieve. So yes, the purchase was a good one by Real Madrid.

What’s your take on the addition of Hazard to the arsenals of the Spanish giants, Real Madrid? Is it a good one? Is it not? Let’s have this discussion.

For 16 goals in 37 appearances, that seems pretty high. I know nothing about football, is that a good average?

Ah, yes. It's a very good average considering that only a few players out there ever score as much as that in a season.
