Bulgarian chestnuts or simply Kesteni

In Bulgaria, began the season of chestnuts. I used to see how they were sold on the streets already fried, for some reason now such sellers do not occur to me. And chestnuts sell raw only in the markets and in shops.

Only these are not the chestnuts that fall on passer-bys on the sidewalks every fall — the whole Sofia is planted with these trees, their fruits are not eaten, because this is the so-called Horse chestnut. They eat the fruits of chestnut seed, American and crustaceans.

They say that the fruits of chestnut are full of carbohydrates and protein and therefore they must sometimes be eaten. Honestly, I eat them only for the sake of variety and benefit - otherwise I don’t really like this kind of food. But while the chestnut is hot, I can eat a couple of pieces. My household treat them as well. So I never buy a lot of them. I bought these chestnuts on the market for Women Pazar in Sofia for 5 levs (2.5 euros) per kilogram. In the photo price per pound.

Also, chestnut fruits contain:

•      Vitamin C;
•      Phosphorus;
•      Potassium;
•      And a lot of starch. More than potatoes.

Chestnuts can be cooked in different ways, but we eat them dried, because raw skin is very difficult to remove from the nut.

To do this, cut the peel on a chestnut crosswise and send them into the oven for 10 or 20 minutes.

It depends on how you like to eat them. The longer they are in the oven, the more the nut will bake and will look like potatoes)
