Song of the day - Knee play 3 from Einstein on the Beach (Philip Glass)

in #recordpool6 years ago (edited)

This is my submission for the Song of the Day by @recordpool.

Philip Glass is a modern composer (born January 31, 1937) from the United States. He is one of the best known proponents of the minimalist form of music. Minimalism (in a short description) is the repetition of a short musical motif or phrase with small variations in each repetition. In many ways, it is the artistic pre-cursor to the ideas of rapid iteration taught in computer coding.

Initially this idea can sound quite boring, however, the genius of the idea comes when combining different parts are of different lengths, which can lead to a mesmerising synchronisation and de-synchronisation of the music! A visual analogue can be viewed below in this video demonstrating the synchronising of the periods of swinging pendulums

Anyway, on to the recommendation! This piece "Knee Play 3" is from the opera/theatre play by Philip Glass, "Einstein on the Beach". It is an amazing and mesmerising recitation of the numbers, and the patterns that they make up as they shift in and out of hearing. It isn't "pleasing" music according to my taste, but it is really interesting none the less!
