Song of the day - Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) - Piano Concerto No 2 in F Major, op 102

This concert for piano and orchestra was composed in 1957 dedicated to his son Maxim, in celebration of his 19 year birthday, which debuted during his graduation at the Moscow Conservatory.

Personally I think this work has all the best characteristics of the composer's symphonic work. The first movement, "Allegro," begins with a kind of "congratulations to you" started by the woods, then immediately enters the piano, as if the voice of his son while play, that evolves to a joyous march.

When the woods take on the theme of the march exposed by the piano, the mood changes, a warning that life is not like that. Shostakovich often used military marches to ridicule the war and Stalin's rule in Russia. Posture is that has earned him political persecution and censorship of some works in his country. Another strong characteristic of his music that presents itself in this first movement, the sensation that we have of the lack of air. This aspect connects with your peculiar humor.

In several of his works we have this sensation. It is clearly the exposure of a ridiculous and corrupt government that practices state violence and torture the people. But anyway ... this concert is about the 19 year anniversary of his son, here this characteristic is like a father-to-son council, which ends in a festive and joyful way.

The second movement is a declaration of love that carries a certain melancholy in its introduction performed by the strings, I like to interpret this "Andante" in this way. The strings is the state of affairs in his country, and the piano the voice of the father in declaration of love to his son. The joy and hope that a new life, a child, brings into the home.

The "Allegro" of the third movement is connected to the second, it begins with the piano performing a cheerful and bouncy theme, followed by a dialogue with the orchestra. In it is present all the energy and joy of childhood play. And some dangers of adolescence, always with a jovial character!

The performance is by the Mariinsky Orchestra, with Denis Matsuev on piano, and direction by Valeri Gergiev. Another recording I like very much is that of Leonerd Bernstain in front of the Philharmonic Orchestra of New York, in this , the work has an even more festive and light character, especially in the first movement, than that demonstrated in the interpretation of the Orchestra Mariinsky. Both are excellent, and the comparison between the two recordings also generates a paradox of emotions and sensations. A privilege that the music of Dmitri Shostakovich offers!

Este concerto para piano e orquestra, foi composto em 1957 dedicado ao seu filho Maxim, em comemoração ao seu aniversario de 19 anos, que estreou a peça durante sua graduação no Conservatório de Moscou.

Pessoalmente penso que esta obra tem todas as melhores características da obra sinfônica do compositor. O primeiro movimento, “Allegro”, começa com uma espécie de “parabéns a você” iniciado pelas madeiras, logo em seguida entra o piano, como se fosse a voz de seu filho ao brincar, que evolui logo para uma alegre marcha.

Quando as madeiras tomam para si o tema da marcha exposto pelo piano, o humor muda, um aviso de que a vida não é bem assim. Shostakovich frequentemente utilizou as marchas de caráter militar para ridicularizar a guerra e o governo de Stalin na Russia. Postura está que lhe rendeu perseguição politica e censura de algumas obras em seu país. Outra característica forte de sua música que se apresenta neste primeiro movimento, é a sensação que temos da falta de ar. Que se conecta ao seu humor peculiar.

Em diversos de seus trabalhos temos esta sensação. É nitidamente a exposição de um governo ridículo e corrupto que pratica violência de estado e tortura o seu povo. Mas enfim... este concerto se trata do aniversario de 19 anos de seu filho, aqui esta característica é como um conselho de pai para filho, que ao final termina de forma festiva e alegre.

O segundo movimento é uma declaração de amor que carrega uma certa melancolia em sua introdução realizada pelas cordas, gosto de interpretar este “Andante” da seguinte forma. As cordas é o estado das coisas em seu país, e o piano a voz do pai em declaração de amor ao seu filho. A alegria e a esperança que uma nova vida, uma criança, traz para dentro de casa.

O “Allegro” do terceiro movimento é conectado ao segundo, ele se inicia com o piano executando um tema alegre e saltitante, seguido de um dialogo com a orquestra. Nele está presente toda a energia e a alegria das brincadeiras da infância. E alguns perigos da adolescência, sempre com um carácter jovial!

A interpretação é da Orquestra Mariinsky, com Denis Matsuev ao piano, e reegencia de Valeri Gergiev. Outra gravação que gosto muito é a de Leonerd Bernstain a frente da Orquestra Filarmonica de Nova York, nesta, a obra tem um caráter ainda mais festivo e leve, em especial no primeiro movimento, do que a demonstrada na interpretação da Orquestra Mariinsky. Ambas são excelentes, e a comparação entre as duas gravações geram inclusive um paradoxo de emoções e sensações. Um privilegio que a música de Dmitri Shostakovich oferece!
