Today we will be taking a look at one of the pinnacles of modern music making. A song that has inspired many of creators, changed the way we view life, taken humanity to another plain in our evolutionary growth.
Of course im talking about:

"Dumb ways to die" from "Metro Trains Melbourne"

If you were thinking i was attempting humor in my intro, you were right. One of these times my attempts might even amount to something. haha.
But the honest truth is that this song could have indeed saved some lives so a little background is in order.

Dumb Ways to Die is an Australian public service announcement campaign by Metro Trains in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to promote rail safety. The campaign video went viral through sharing and social media starting in November 2012. The song "Dumb Ways to Die" from the video was written by John Mescall with music by Ollie McGill from The Cat Empire, who also produced it. It was performed by Emily Lubitz, the lead vocalist of Tinpan Orange, with McGill providing backing vocals.
"The aim of this campaign is to engage an audience that really doesn't want to hear any kind of safety message" McCann estimated that within two weeks, it had generated at least $50 million worth of global media value in addition to more than 700 media stories, for "a fraction of the cost of one TV ad". According to Metro Trains, the campaign contributed to a more than 30% reduction in "near-miss" accidents, from 13.29 near-misses per million kilometres in November 2011 – January 2012, to 9.17 near-misses per million kilometres in November 2012 – January 2013. Ok so as we can see there are actual statistics to back up the effect a simple, at first glance, silly song like this had.
So why was that? The approach to spreading awareness was actually brilliant that takes us to this:

"It matters less what you're saying but rather how you are saying it"

The way they went about spreading a message included careful planning, a great understanding of internet culture that came together into an ingenious marketing strategy which propelled this song to the top of youtube trending pages and beyond, as they clearly state.

The song itself is extremely catchy, wonderfully funny and has a message embedded inside. Thats a huge accomplishment when you realize that this is a institutionally warranted musical creation. We all know institutions rarely have a sense of humor.
The song and animation follows the stars of the video, each of whom has a name apparently ( Dimwit, Clod, Doomed, Numskull, Mishap, Dunce) kill themselves in increasingly silly and hilariously grotesque ways.

Its really one of those songs that stick with you, maybe not for its musical quality (although id argue differently) or appreciation for the art, but rather for how smart it actually is, its great success of achieving what it intended to do. And thats something i think every artist, musician strives towards.

Hope you enjoyed my short post. Its really worth a listen, if not for a chuckle or two but the message that it gives out.

I absolutely love this song which I bought on iTunes along with the game on iOS. Since this is an Australian PSA and I live in Canada, if their goal is to get viral on a global scale, I’d say they succeeded.

Oh They definitely succeeded. Its just one of those amazingly catchy songs and not only that they succeeded in a musical way, they achieved what they set out to do. Save lives..
I think that just makes it on a level of its own.

I totally agree. Releasing a successful song is hard in itself. Releasing a successful song with an important life-saving message and actually get that message across is near impossible so that does make it a level of its own.

You can have the greatest lessons to teach someone, but if you do not know how to teach them they will never understand you.

And, this song is epic no doubt.

"Take your helmet of in the outer space, and use clothes drier as a hiding place."

Wow! Learned something today. I never associated this as an ad. I always thought this was a child songs. I never really paid attention to the lyrices. Love it. ^^
