JOHN CHAPTER 17.png

  1. When Jesus had spoken these things, He raised His eyes to heaven [in prayer] and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, so that Your Son may glorify You.

  2. Just as You have given Him power and authority over all mankind, [now glorify Him] so that He may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him [to be His—permanently and forever].

  3. Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true [supreme and sovereign] God, and [in the same manner know] Jesus [as the] Christ whom You have sent.

  4. I have glorified You [down here] on the earth by completing the work that You gave Me to do.

  5. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory and majesty that I had with You before the world existed.

  6. “I have manifested Your name [and revealed Your very self, Your real self] to the people whom You have given Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept and obeyed Your word.

  7. Now [at last] they know [with confident assurance] that all You have given Me is from You [it is really and truly Yours].

  8. For the words which You gave Me I have given them; and they received and accepted them and truly understood [with confident assurance] that I came from You [from Your presence], and they believed [without any doubt] that You sent Me.

  9. I pray for them; I do not pray for the world, but for those You have given Me, because they belong to You;

  10. and all things that are Mine are Yours, and [all things that are] Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them.

  11. I am no longer in the world; yet they are still in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, so that they may be one just as We are.

  12. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and protected them, and not one of them was lost except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

  13. But now I am coming to You; and I say these things [while I am still] in the world so that they may experience My joy made full and complete and perfect within them [filling their hearts with My delight].

  14. I have given to them Your word [the message You gave Me]; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world and do not belong to the world, just as I am not of the world and do not belong to it.

  15. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but that You keep them and protect them from the evil one.

  16. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  17. Sanctify them in the truth [set them apart for Your purposes, make them holy]; Your word is truth.

  18. Just as You commissioned and sent Me into the world, I also have commissioned and sent them (believers) into the world.

  19. For their sake I sanctify Myself [to do Your will], so that they also may be sanctified [set apart, dedicated, made holy] in [Your] truth.

  20. “I do not pray for these alone [it is not for their sake only that I make this request], but also for [all] those who [will ever] believe and trust in Me through their message,

  21. that they all may be one; just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be one in Us, so that the world may believe [without any doubt] that You sent Me.

  22. I have given to them the glory and honor which You have given Me, that they may be one, just as We are one;

  23. I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected and completed into one, so that the world may know [without any doubt] that You sent Me, and [that You] have loved them, just as You have loved Me.

  24. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given to Me [as Your gift to Me], may be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

  25. “O just and righteous Father, although the world has not known You and has never acknowledged You [and the revelation of Your mercy], yet I have always known You; and these [believers] know [without any doubt] that You sent Me;

  26. and I have made Your name known to them, and will continue to make it known, so that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them [overwhelming their heart], and I [may be] in them.”

Jesus said something in vs 4

I have glorified You [down here] on the earth by completing the work that You gave Me to do.

So, doing the work God gave to you is the only way to glorify Him. And the work can't be done without knowing your purpose on earth.

Most people live a life void of purpose and their lives don't bring glory to God, it also leads to emptiness and frustration on earth.

See vs 5

Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory and majesty that I had with You before the world existed.

So it invariably means that your glorification on earth is tied to fulfilling of purpose. Little wonder most folks struggle in life because GOD WILL NOT SPONSOR WHAT HE DIDN'T COMMISSION.

Discover purpose
Pursue it
Then glorification is inevitable

God bless us

John he tends to describe everything he saw in his teacher, his gestures, his look as here, but above all his prayer, trying to portray his words without missing the truth, Now Jesus refers to the authority that has been entrusted to him, which only operates on everything mortal, nature and man, but for it to be above all, it needs to go to the cross, so that its authority is magnified on heaven and earth (Mt 28:18). Note that obedience always entails greater authority. The relationship between the Father and the Son has to be understood in order to understand the Father, if we are left with only one part we will not see the whole picture of the deity. What one has, belongs to the other, that clearly speaks of the unity in which the Father and the Son remain. And Jesus knew that those whom the Father had given him would glorify his name by preaching his message of repentance to all humanity. When we prayed as Jesus prayed, that prayer that we know as our Father we must recognize this great truth, by sanctifying ourselves and to turn away from the wickedness of our hearts, we sanctify God, that is why we say in that prayer that Jesus taught us: "Hallowed be your name," because we sanctify his name by sanctifying ourselves by paying attention to the scripture, exhortation and discipline of the Lord. Jesus made known to the Father how he really is, real, true, just, dignified, glorious and has continued to do so through his testimony of life, so that his just and faithful witness of the love of God in his death and resurrection, this always present in us.

"I pray for them; I do not pray for the world, but for those You have given Me, because they belong to You" ;We are so privileged to be among the chosen ones for we are favoured in the sight of God Almighty for Jesus prayed for us.

Beautiful request Jesus makes to the father when he says:

I am not in the world; however, they are still in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in your name, the name you have given me, to be one as we are.
John 17:11

Let us keep together in one body just as Jesus and the father are one.

verse 24> Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given to Me [as Your gift to Me], may be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, because You loved Me before the foundation of the world

God loves you and me even before the foundations of the earth was created. So why panic. Stay put and see God take care of you.

Thanks for this @reliquary

In this chapter we can see how Jesus Christ intercedes for us. For those of us who have believed in Him and He ask God to protect us from evil because He is the only intercessor between the father and us.

Prayer was one of the themes that Jesus wanted to introduce into the hearts of his followers, demonstrating that it was of the utmost importance to cry out to the father at all times to seek direction and wisdom. For this reason we see in this chapter the apostle John highlight the triple prayer that the Lord made for each of the believers, disciples, ministers ... before the crucifixion and all for an end, which was the unity of the disciples.
Today Jesus continues to intercede before the father for the unity of his entire church.
Thank you @relicuary for being a motivator of the word of God, for believers.

I have glorified You [down here] on the earth by completing the work that You gave Me to do. - v.4

Any time I come across this verse of the scripture, it births a strong challenge in my spirit that there is much to be done, while God gives me strength. This was an absolute testimony of a man who lived out purpose. Similarly, Paul testified that he had fought a good fight and had finished his course with a hope of a crown preserved for him.

Each time we successfully execute our assignments, there is a reward earmarked for us. This should be our goal while we remain on earth - to glorify the Father by finishing every work assigned to us.

Thank you @reliquary for sharing

This chapter, many scholars of the Bible call it "the Lord's Prayer", then, the prayer presented by John, which makes the Lord Jesus contains a triple request: - that He be glorified, that the apostles be sanctified and that the church stay together.
Jesus' request about himself is not selfish, because his desire is to glorify the Father, to glorify the Father is to make him known. Jesus would soon manifest as the savior of the world through his redeeming death, those who believed in Him would know God and thus possess eternal life.
Although Jesus does not pray for his disciples to be satiated from the world, if he does so that they may be freed from their evil in the name of the Father, he also prays that they may be sanctified, that is, set apart for the ministry of truth.
In his last petition, Jesus prays for the unity of the believers of future generations, the unity he asks for is not of an organizational nature but spiritual, which would manifest itself in a visible way in the life of the church and give witness to the divine mission of Christ. . The unity of the church would reach its consummation in heaven.

Jesus should be our example to follow, he showed us that prayer is essential to have victory in all areas of our lives, because, He prayed in each direction and adversity, so that the will of his father was done, besides He cared for his disciples, apostles and the church, placing them and entrusting them into the hands of the Eternal Father: Jehovah God of Hosts.
Thank you @relicuary, for the motivation that inspires us to read, and interpret the scriptures.
