Time is running out for Aaron Finch, says Shane Warne

The terribly poor form of Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch is being seen as a major worry for the Kangaroos, who are already playing as a weak side in the absence of the two stalwarts Steve Smith and David Warner. The defending champions would not want to go into the next World Cup starting in May under a struggling captain and former Australia captain Ian Chappell has already said that Finch’s current form would give the selectors a ‘hell of a headache’. Finch though led Australia to their first T20I series win in India recently, he has managed just eight runs in three games so far (two T20Is and one ODI) including two zeroes.

Australian spin wizard Shane Warne has also expressed a strong opinion over Finch saying the Australian skipper might have one more innings left to hit back to form or perish. Finch, who made his Test debut last year against Pakistan, was removed from the side following a poor run against India at home and in the ODIs, too, he has scored single-digit figure in the four of his last seven ODI innings. Even sacking the captain just months ahead of the WC will not be a happy experience for the Australian side.
Finch won the toss in the second ODI against India in Nagpur on Tuesday and asked the hosts to bat. He will certainly have the test of his career in this game for another failure could see circumstances going oddly against him.

He probably has a game or two left
“At the moment, he probably only has a game or two left. It makes a huge thing leading into the World Cup to lose your captain,” Warne said on Fox Cricket before the start of the Nagpur ODI.

Starting from Allan Border, a series of Australian captains have had a memorable affair with the WC and Finch would want to live up to the expectations but for that to happen, he needs to score some runs to continue to have the selectors’ and fans’ trust.

“He was trying to improve his technique against the red-ball, trying a different technique and it’s just messed him around in the one-day format. He’s now come up against a terrific India bowling side that has worked him out … and he’s facing the new ball.”

Even Chappell believed that playing in the longer format did damage to Finch’s performance as a batsman. Warne also floated probable replacements for Finch as the captain and among his suggestions are Glenn Maxwell and Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine.
