C64 Game Memories - Revisited 30+ Years later : Bubble Bobble
Bubble Bobble is one of those games where I have the theme tune burned into my mind, its very repetitive in a good way.
For me this is one of the best Arcade conversions of all time on home computers, i'd say it has been ported to pretty much every computer and I myself had this first on the C64 and then the Atari ST.
The ST version was better of course but the C64 version still holds up better than most original arcade releases. You guide Bub & Bob through multiple levels, and blow bubbles to capture enemies and then have to pop the bubble to kill them. You clear the level when you've killed them all.
I always loved platformers but I think Bubble Bobble is one of my favourites because of how fast paced it is and how deep you could get into the game. I don't think I ever completed it, but I regularly used to get to well over 60 levels deep. You could clear a level really fast, especially in 2 players mode, sometimes within 30 seconds.
Lots of platformers at the time were quite slow paced, Bubble Bobble was very different. It's sequel Rainbow Islands was similar but not quite as fun to play, although it had another memorable theme tune.
For sure a classic C64 game and one of those that is still very playable today.
