Power - Season 1 (Real-Time) Review - PART 2

in #review6 years ago

Here's the second part to my 'Real-Time' review of the first season of Power. A 'Real-Time' review is when I review each episode as I watch it in a hope of capturing the most authentic in the moment reaction I can. If you haven't read the first part you can read that here. Spoilers ahead, obviously. Enjoy!

Episode 5 ''I Gotta Go''

Ghost was overly dickish about Tommy bringing Holly to his home for dinner but obviously it turns out that he's completely right and going in line with the rest of the female characters on this show, she just turns out to be a whore, a thief, a user, a gold digger etc.

I think Angie is definitely my least favourite character, this woman can't act either, she's awkward in every single scene and I'm sick to death already watching her poorly executed relationship with Ghost it's fucking interminable! They're trying to sell her to us as this hard working slick FBI agent and it's falling flat on its face!

Tasha's also my least favourite character in this show, maybe more so than Angie, what a waste of fucking space she is! A slut, a gold digger, a leech, a whiny bitch who feels entitlement over everyone, just an absolute piece of shit human being, the worst type of person.

I liked seeing Tommy a little vulnerable there, he's probably my favourite character at this point but it still feels forced, especially when he started rapping. I'm not sure what his motives are though, what is it he's working towards? Ghost just wants to go legit, why are Tommy and Tasha so fucking opposed to that, Jesus!

Episode 6 ''Who You With''

Nice to see 50 Cent back! Looks like he's getting out soon, I look forward to that! How am I supposed to take Angie seriously, she's supposed to be this skilled FBI agent on some sting operation and she's caked in make-up, she looks like something off Jersey Shore, it's embarrassingly cringe worthy.

Holly flips out when she finds some of Tommy's money despite having lapped up blood from his fists in a previous episode, character-wise it comes out of nowhere and ultimtely leads to nothing. I like the idea of these two but as with everything else so far, it's poorly executed and unimpactful.

Angie, despite being an FBI agent, apparently, who's working on the biggest case in her career seems to be on a date while her informant risks his disgusting life trying to capture pertinent information on tape for her, Greg and tattoo tears are outside in a van while she galivants with Ghost in another part of town.

Tasha breaks into song at her MTV-esque birthday party, at first she's shocked to even be asked and with her mind elsewhere, her stolen earrings and a confrontation with Holly, seems reluctant but then immediately breaks into an American Idol worthy performance, I actually laughed out loud!

Episode 7 ''Loyalty''

Tasha's friends are even lower on the pecking order than her, they're self centred money obessed layabouts waiting for a man to do everything for them. Tasha tells some simple throwaway story which, from what we've been shown isn't true anyway and their literally like, 'I love that story, it's like the first time I hear it everytime I hear it'...

Then, after that rivoting scene with Tasha and co, we go straight into a pointless sex scene with Ghost and Angie, a cringe worthy sex scene which is only in the show to appease the worst sort of fans. Marlo! It's Marlo Stanfield from The Wire, just makes me miss The Wire, Charmain Bucco and Jackie Jr. from The Sopranos have also been in this, I miss watching good shows!

We get the most emotional moment in the show so far when Ghost decides to kill... I wanna say, Rollo? It was okay but all they did to develop their relationship was have Ghost mention it briefly in a previous episode so it doesn't land as it should, like, say, Wallace in The Wire. It just wasn't sufficiently developed. Oh, Sleek product placement, not Beats By Dre!

I'm not gonna lie, I enjoyed that little twist at the end there with 50 Cent turning out to be the bad guy and that chick in the pink sneakers actually working for him. The episode ends with 50 Cent putting out a hit on Ghost and I hope he succeeds to be honest!

Episode 8 ''Best Laid Plans''

This was the most lively episode so far, it actually felt like things were happening, Ghost finally decides to leave Tasha and plans to move to Miami with Angie who plans to work in some sort of management role in his club there, I wonder how she became an FBI agent in the first place, doesn't seem like a job you'd just fall into but it feels like she must have just fallen into it, given her complete lack of focus.

Holly gets shot and seemingly dies after a little moment of friction with Ghost, what a waste of time that whole thing was with her and Tommy. Tommy's off playing hitman for Ruiz for some reason, digs continue to be thrown at Ghost for actually wanting to build something legit with his clubs, Tasha continues to be awful and we get a whiff of Mama Tasha who's just as awful.

50 Cent's finally released from prison, I look forward to those two worlds colliding and finding out why he wants Ghost dead, I'm sure it will be a stupid reason! Ghost hands over decision making rights to Tommy and decides by the end of the episode after the failed attempt on his life by a woman who's otherwise been flawless in her methods, now she's just whacking guns out in public!?

All in all this was probably the best episode so far but it's still not that great a show, so far at least, there's no character development, there's no chemistry between any of these people, dialogue is akwardly delivered, motives aren't sufficiently explained or justified, the narrative itself feels very forced, it's a show full of cliches and the direction feels messy, there's nothing I'm particularly invested in at all yet, there's potential in certain elements but the beat hasn't dropped yet.

Thankyou for reading if you made it through all of that, and I'll see you for my Real-Time review of the second season, until next time you beautiful Steemians!
