"Rango" by Gore Verbinski - review

in #review6 years ago (edited)

We can talk a lot about "Rango". I can talk about a crisis of identity, genre development, new technological and creative approaches to building the film, but I do not see any sense, and quite frankly, it would be forcing things. So, in a nutshell, I will just throw one or two of the main moments that ordinary viewers would have liked to have cast an eye on. Rango is a chameleon who always wanted, if not to be a real hero, at least to take on the role of one. One day fate pushes him into the desert town of Dust, where he gets the chance of his life, which will not last long. Only where there is no room for retreat, and Rango, contrary to his instincts for self-preservation, who scream for him to rob his brothers in the blink of an instant, must remain and resolve the mystery with the dust of vanishing water.

It's true that history is not a "dramatic concrete" like most of Pixar's films, but it's far ahead of most of the animations that have flooded us lately. If you let a film look like a big hallucination, it is a western one, and as such you can find absolutely all the necessary elements for the genre - from the stranger who comes to save the town through the local strong woman and the terrorist bandits the peaceful people, the classic element with the great greedy villain and, of course, the ubiquitous water. Everything else is detail. As you know, magic is hidden in detail, and Rango offers countless details, and the bigger your cinema culture, the more you will notice and appreciate. The film has countless pop culture and film links from "Star Wars" and "Apocalypse Now" to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (played by Johnny Depp), yet they are not in the style of an acquaintance slightly irritating to the manner of DreamWorks, and are mostly dictated by the fact that "Rango" is a Western and respects the classics in the genre. Personally, I can not deal with all the references (I'm not talking about duels at noon and things like that, but about specific film titles), but some just can not be mistaken as Clint Eastwood's "Man without a name" or the Spirit of the West, if you prefer), one of the strangest moments that reminded me of the third "Pirates of the Caribbean" when Jack Sparrow wandered through the lands beyond.

I guess the reason for the emergence of this particular scene in my mind lies in the visual style of the film. At the heart of the project is George Lucas's studio for special effects by director Gore Verbinski working on the first three films in the Pirates series and it seems logical part of their visual quests to find a voice in this film . What I can say is that from a visual point of view, "Rango" is an absolute masterpiece - one of the films that not only comes close to the excessively high level imposed by Pixar but also surpasses it. Of course, we should note that the style of animation is slightly different. Because of the mostly childish focus of their films, Pixar still retains some conditionality, while in "Rango", the degree of realism is enormous. However, in 99.9% of cases, realism is the number one target in ILM's projects. The final of "Rango" will hardly blow you up, but it will surely amuse you and impress you with not one or two elements. He's not only among the best animations for the last 10 years, but he's also among the best movies ever. And for those who want to know about the lizard ... He will die!
