DC's Titans Finally Finds Its Footing After Episode 6: 'Jason Todd'

in #review5 years ago

Though I've followed the show, I felt from the start that Titans was off in tone and structure. The opening flashback scene didn't work, the dark tone seemed a bit forced, and the characters strangely... flat.

All this changed after episode 6, easily the best of the first six in my opinion. Maybe because we finally got to see the full extent of Dick's past, giving him some much needed depth, and because Jason's cheery, psycho, in-love-with-Bruce Robin was sich a strong counterpoint to Dick's. Also, the conversations between the titans team seemed much much smoother and the flashbacks were right on point.

After Jason saves Dick from those sent to kill him and Dr. Adamson, the two head to one of Bruce's luxurious safehouses where Dick learns the new Robin had been put on duty almost immediately after he had left, and that Bruce has deleted his pass into his facilities. Jason has come with a message from Bruce: someone has been killing his former friends from his parent's circus. Dick, of course, immediately brings the rest of the titans to the safehouse and heads to find the last surviving member of the circus, dogged by Jason who is super thrilled to be working with him.

At first, Dick tries to be accomodating and doesn't say anything to Jason. But as the episode goes on, he finally cannot take it any longer and reveals just how deep his falling out with Bruce was, warning Jason to stay away before he is irreversibly changed.

However, it soon turns out that Jason is not Dick. The younger Robin has a dark impulse that he keeps in check only when working with the Batman, feeling free to use his mask to commit any sort of crimes including petty theft and fights. This culninates in a final scene where he fights and brutally injures some police officers he could have easily evaded while Dick fought off the villain of the episode--someone from the darkest part of his past.

As the two part and Jason returns to the titans, its impossible not to feel that his leaving batman has forced the dark knight into recruiting in a rush, and inadvertently encouraging a future villain.

Meanwhile, Dr. Adamson has woken up...

*What did ypu think of the episode and the series so far? Is it good, just getting better, or am I grasping at straws? Let's know in the comments!
