Need For Speed: The Movie Review
This is about more than racing
In talking about movies based on video games, need for speed is undoubtedly one of the best I've seen. The cinematography was awesome, and the story was so good it actually drew me in and to be honest, I hadn't expected that. The conflict between the characters was super. Talk about stakes! Talk about intensity! And let's not even go into the soundtrack... but I guess for a Need for Speed movie, that should be expected.
The movie begins with a voice over from Monarch, a reclusive race c and we are literally told Tobey Marshall is the best race car driver ever. Then we are introduced to Tobey and his crew, Finn, Pete, Benny and Joe Peck, all of whom work together at Tobey's automobile shop. That's just their day job, though -- at night, Tobey and Pete take part in street racing, watched over by Benny from his chopper in the sky.
Enter Dino. The rivalry between Tobey and Dino is palpable, so the rich driver doesn't come to him at once, but instead lets Anita, his fiancée, Pete's sister and Tobey's ex-girlfriend to approach him first. When Dino does come, he offers him at least $500,000 for his crew's expertise in cars, to have them restore a one-of-a-kind Ford Mustang. They're all reluctant to have anything to do with Dino, but the automobile shop is in trouble and they really need the money so Tobey accepts. And they do get the job done. But just as the deal concludes and the restored car is sold, Tobey's and Dino's rivalry reaches a peak, and they must know who is the best on the road. Dino offers each of them identical, very fast cars (Pete joins in) and the race is on.
And here, everything falls apart. When Tobey is close to winning, with a lot of help from Pete who blocks Dino, Dino hits the boys's rear tire and sends him crashing in flames, dying instantly. Then, as Tobey turns back to help,he goes ahead to 'win', leaving Pete there.
Did I say the rivalry was peaked before? After this, it skyrocketed. Dino left quickly and covered up all evidence of his being at the scene, leaving Tobey to take the fall for Pete's death and leading to him losing the shop and spending two years in prison. When he does get out, it's time for revenge. He borrows the Ford he'd restored and enters the De Leon, a winner-takes-all race organised by Monarch. Dino tries to stop him, but he fails and they both meet at the race where Tobey wins and, uncovering the car that killed Pete, finally proved his innocence.
Okay, there was a lot of action in that last part, but you got to watch it to feel it. I highly recommend this, especially for Need For Speed fans. Still, the best aspect of the movie to me was how the characters had clear motives that really set them against each other. It might be a movie based on a racing game, but it was far more than that.

What? There's a Need for Speed movie? Loved the game or the different versions that I played of it. I would have liked to read a little more than a description of the plot/ action but I can feel the energy throughout this post.
If I ever get the chance, I will surely give this a watch. Thanks for sharing! :>)
Sorry... Didn't have much time to put into the review. Yeah, it's not so well known, but if you liked the games, you'll definitely love the movie! In fact, I hear a sequel is in the works. 🙌
I don't think a sequel will happen. The movie made too little money at the box office and I don't think it set the ancillary market on fire.
I think that you should write at the headline or at the beginning of the review that it's a spoiler review. It sounds like an interesting movie, but now I don't see a need to watch it. As terrible as it sounds, the first Mortal Kombat is still my favorite computer game adapted to a movie.
