The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie - Review

in #review5 years ago

The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, I read his first trilogy more than four years ago. Huh, it was very hard for me to decide whether I like it or not. You see, as a genre of epic fantasy, this trilogy meets all the requirements to be excellent, and he is also a great writer. However, while I was reading, something did not click there for me.

His first trilogy in career, and really excellent debutant work. The first association with the style of writing was to remind me a lot of the style Martin used in his Song of Ice and Fire. In fact, although much of it remind me of Martins work, his style does not intertwine with him or copy him. Many reviews around the world and the Internet glorify the work of this author, although I have to admit that I could not crawl that thought. Objectively, his work is among the best in the genre but as I sad before, it did not click for me.

Because it contains all the elements that this may be a classic in this genre. Joe successfully implements all the necessary elements in his narration, which is to possess magic above all. That magic is not fully elaborated in the sense that it extends through the whole idea of a story and that the idea of a novel relies on it, nor the functioning of the world itself. It also contains great characters, which are very colorful. What I liked most in his writing style is great humor, a black humor that is perfectly embedded in the characters of the characters of the novel itself. The classic story setting includes more than one protagonist, or bearers of the story itself. The time and significance are divided among them, although at the very end of the trilogy some events will make some of the main protagonists fall into the second plan.

Once again, the thing that did not work for my taste, is that the writer did not devote enough time to building up the world itself, like on the emphasis on characters, protagonists, and humor. What is actually quite legitimate, because it's obviously a stronger side of writing. And it works so well that only after finishing and more detailed analysis you realize that there might be some elements that make this adventure more complete.

About the characters, I have to admit as much as they have been greatly developed through the story. We get to know their past, we follow them, we begin to understand them and why they are in the state they are now. Many critics call these characters unforgettable. However, I was not at all surprised at any of these, none of them grew up with my heart. You know that you usually have one or more characters that are dear to you and then you take care of their fates, this is not the case here. The positive side of these characters is that you can not be sure at the very beginning who is a good guy and who is bad, and it arouses curiosity.

Action and adventure through the story works really great, these are sequences that really justify that this novel in that context may be one of the best.

The very trilogy itself is called The First Law and contains: The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, the Last Argument of Kings.
