Roseanne Did Nothing Wrong

in #roseanne6 years ago

Roseanne Barr, an actress and comedian, well known for her shock value antics, is currently being skewered by the American public. Her #1 hit TV series has been cancelled, due to her tweet comparing a woman to an ape and the 'religion that starts with the letter M' brotherhood. She has now been branded as the 'R word', and everyone is searching for the roots of her deep-seated 'R word'. Here is my take on the issue.

I would agree that it is not a good thing when people are not treated equally. That is the sad part about America. People of color have been systematically degraded and denied opportunity by white people. It is great that you would like to see people treated equally in America, but that is not the case today. Racism is the oppression of a marginalized group in a society. The reason why Roseanne did something wrong is she attempted to marginalize someone in a marginalized group to the point of being an animal and not even human. If Valerie Jarrett where to turn around and say the exact same thing to Roseanne it would not be considered racism because Roseanne is not in a marginalized racial group. I hope this adds some clarity as to why action was taken against Roseanne.

Like Kathy Griffin and Paula Deen before her......Roseanne forgot she works for a company. And like the aforementioned celebs...she was reminded that she is not just responsible for what she does...but can be held accountable for the mere perception of wrongdoing. Especially when the people who pay her salary answer not just to a board...but to shareholders. Does Roseanne have a history of outrageous behaviour? Yes. Is this tame in comparison to some of that content? Yes.

There is a movie I suggest for fellow Maicans who wish to further their understanding of learned behaviour...The Passion of Darkly Noon (1995). For me the takeaway is people who wield power...pedestrian or otherworldly...MUST be aware of not just how that power is wielded in their own lives but how it affects others inadvertently and that there is a law of unintended consequences for the things we are, say and do. Roseanne wields tremendous power whether she will admit it or not. The company she works for knows this all too well. After decades of careful branding...they are not going to allow an actor with no loyalty to that brand to tarnish it...ambien or not.

It is my belief...that Roseanne did a few things wrong. It is my hope that she will not simply pay for her 'wrongdoing'...but learn from it/them. Peace and blessings be upon you and yours. Walk good.
