Caribbean sailing and cruising info!

in #sailing6 years ago

Hey as you probably don’t know I’ve been sailing the Caribbean for the last 4 years. My alterior motive, other then tanning, was to create a vast information source for sailing newbies.

Https://www.virtualbeachs.com is just that. It has great info on every Caribbean island. Like where to anchor, beaches, bars, things to do and general information on each country.

Its always evolving as I generally can only dedicate a couple months each season to working on it due to the lack of wifi at anchor.

I hope you check it out. I even refer to it sometimes when I forget where things are. Tight lines!

I did something similar some few years ago, tried to make a Norwegian wiki for boat owners - being a practical reference guide both on geographical information as well as guides on boat maintenance, tips and hints on what to look for when buying a boat, directory of boat-related companies, even supermarkeds and other relevant shops with boat-friendly location, etc.

Unfortunately the contribution rate was very poor, I created like 98% of the content myself, in addition that I had the burden of technical maintenance. Eventually I didn't manage to find the time for the latter and I had to can the project. It's a pity, I believe I made great stuff.

The name of the project was båtwiki.no

Yea no body wants to contribute. The only successful one was active captain that garmin just bought. Im adding 1000 pictures of all the locations ive been to that i think will put me over the top. When i push it in FB groups im getting 40,000 hits a month for free!

Hello, interesting site!

Since I want to sail there next year, I have a few questions.

I noticed, that a lot books about the region are very cheap. This is because of the hurricans last year and some marinas just don't exsist anymore. Do you have any informations about that?

Next thing are the claration costs, when you arrive at the island the first time. I could hardly find any informations about that. Could you maybe cover this topic aswell?

Most marinas still exist but are in bad shape from puerto rico to Antigua. Dockage is $1-$2 per foot a day. Id say about 1/2 of marinas publish their prices online. And i will totally add customs info and costs. It varies alot island to island from $300 usd to $5 usd. I’m probably doing Customs next week.

thanks, yea I ment the costs for the info
Yes I ment the costs if you go there the first time and go with your passport to the border controll, imigration office, police etc.

e.g. I sail from the capo verdes to barbados and arrive at the entry port..
