Prayer is an important element in the life of the Christian. Now, what did Paul mean when he said "pray without ceasing"? How could we lead a normal life doing such a thing?

In the first place, the apostle did not mean that we should go everywhere muttering with God. More, well, he taught us that we can live in a constant attitude of intercession, even while performing our daily routines. Of course, there are days when we pray much more than others. But no matter what activities we have on our "to-do" list, we can have a natural and ongoing conversation with the Lord that encompasses all aspects of our life.

Should you pray for insignificant or routine matters? Yes! God listens to each prayer. Since he is interested in all aspects of his life, he invites him to talk with him about anything that worries him, interests him, confuses him, scares him, challenges him or touches his life in some way. You should ask him to help you with the little details, such as finding your lost glasses or remembering any information that you have forgotten. It is through such petitions that you learn how loving and gentle your heavenly Father is, and that you are a son or daughter of God whom He loves very much.

Outsiders can find that kind of total trust in the foolish Lord, but does that matter? It is only through prayer that we can access the unlimited resources of heaven. Only by asking the Lord that we can prove the truth of his promise: "If you ask something in my name, I will do it" (Jn 14, 14). Too often we limit our prayer precisely because we do not abandon ourselves with all our heart to the grace and mercy of our heavenly Father.

God called us to be a people of prayer, and frequent communication creates an intimate relationship with our Savior. Through the time we spend with Him, we discover his goodness, his fidelity and his wonderful direction for our life. We also find strength and wisdom for each dangerous curve in the path of our life, so that we can experience all that for which God created us. If we develop a perspective of life that is saturated in prayer, the moment will come when our communication with the Lord will become our first instinct in each situation, and not only when we face a challenge or find ourselves in some difficulty. With time, it will never occur to us not to pray.
