Teach Responsibility

All human beings have strengths and weaknesses that we have to learn to strengthen. One of the things that should be taught very early in life is responsibility. Responsibility is one of the fundamental bases in the realization of every human being, and it is a skill that can be started from a very early age. If we teach a child the importance of being responsible, then we will have established a primordial basis in his development, and we will be cooperating in the future with a mature and responsible adult.

But, what is responsibility? Responsibility is the capacity existing in every subject to recognize and accept the consequences of a fact freely carried out; it is a moral obligation or obligation that results for someone because of the possible error in a specific thing or matter; it means that one is capable of responding to what happens to him. Responsibility is something we have to learn to assume from a young age. Irresponsibility is not bad, it simply means that you do not know how to respond to a certain situation.

To teach responsibility to a child, it is enough to show him that each of the things he does have consequences. For example, if a child spills a glass of milk during breakfast, that is not "wrong", the best thing in this case is to say to the child: "Well, now you will have to clean the table and the floor". And the child should be left to do it. What is important here is that the child observes the work and the effort he makes, which will teach him to take responsibility; that is, to respond to what has caused. Many adults are irresponsible because as children they were not taught the consequences of what they did. We often reprimand young people instead of making them aware of what they are doing and of receiving their own consequences, not because it is a punishment, but because it is a way to learn to be responsible.

A child or young person who breaks the boundaries and who does not "care about anything" is someone who rebels against an authority that has not known how to convey responsibility. Ezekiel 18: 4 says, "... the soul that sins will die." We are responsible for what we do, but also for what we do not do. And doing it or not doing it does not justify us or exempt us from our responsibility. We must learn to be responsible for our actions instead of evading them by blaming others for what happens to us. Only we are the only ones responsible for how we feel today, no matter who harmed us or who let us down.

Each new day we have the option to choose to be responsible for my today or live anchored in yesterday, blaming others. The Lord tells us, "... and I will never again remember your sins and transgressions" (Heb 10:17), so let us lay off all burdens and assume our responsibility to do what God has commanded us to do.
