THE MAN

"Sir: What is man so that you think about him ... or the son of man for you to estimate?"
Psalm 144: 3

Of all the analyzes and the divagues in which my little head has been immersed, this seems to be one of the most inconsequential; because it is very difficult to have an objective appreciation of oneself. It's hard to be impartial. You can not be judge and party. To be the image reflected in a mirror, to be the mirror itself, but also the viewer and owner of both. This leads to underestimating or oversizing, both the defects and the virtues of that which is the object of our analysis.

As a medicine worker, passionate about human anatomy and physiology, I fell in love with but without knowing it, the author, the artist, the designer and executor of this strange and complex human machinery. I admired the ability to print in each of his works of art, the seal of exclusivity and the guarantee of a quality that transcends time and age. Fascinated by the functioning of the liver, brain and heart; collecting bones to study them, transiting entangled by kilometers of arteries, veins and capillaries, the question: "What is man?" divided my soul into two. It was like the bookmark between two pages of a book, as exciting as it is indecipherable!

Between anatomy and physiology; between literature and philosophy; between matter and spirit; medicine and psychology, the question: "What is man?" has been like the million dollar question! What is the human being? Is it the best machine? Is the heart that inspires the poets just a blood pump? Is it man, just a brain capable of processing information, like a computer's hard drive? Is man reduced to a filtering kidney, a stomach that consumes, a lung that ventilates and a bowel that he discards? Dawn as a spectator, in a hospital emergency room looking for answers, can be the most frustrating experience, or the most exciting and elevating experience.

There you can see man reduced to its minimum expression. Prostrate ... without mobility. Gagged ... deprived of the right to shout even his own anguish. Naked ... stripped of titles and honors. The old man, with total lack of conscience and time, as if to correct directions. The young man and the mother, both fighting hard to get out of that prison without bars. One, to live what is just beginning, and she prostrating herself before an inert and cold image, like the very death, in an attempt of religious blackmail. Doped ... without control of time and hands that take turns to explore and invade intimate territories, of a body that until that moment, was private property.

Please Lord ... answer me! "... what is man, so that you think about him? And what is the human being, so that you estimate it so much? (Psalm 144: 3) The psalmist said: "You did it a little less than the angels ..." (Psalm 8: 6) and alluding to the transitory nature of man, these were the words of the psalmist, of which I echo:

"Let the LORD make known to me my end, and how much is the measure of my days; I know how fragile I am. Behold, you gave my days a short term, and my age is like nothing before you; Certainly it is complete vanity, every man who lives ... Certainly, as a shadow is man; Surely in vain does he labor, accumulate riches, and he does not know who will gather them. " (Psalm 39: 4-6)

And now Lord, what will I expect? ... My hope is in you. (Psalm 39: 7)

Sort:

But although man is insignificant in relation to space and time, however, he is still the object of God's special attention.
(Job 7:17) "What is man, that you may magnify him, and that you may lay your heart upon him?"
(Ps 144: 3) "O LORD, what is man, that in him you may think, or the son of man, that you may esteem him?"
Its importance is due to what the psalmist explains: "You have done it". Man is the special creation of God. Therefore, despite being a weak and outdated being, nevertheless God did it in his image, according to his likeness, and this is what makes him special and superior to the rest of creation.
(Gen 1: 26-27) "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let him have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over the every animal that creeps on the earth, and God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.
