50 million TREES will be planted in BRITAIN... it's crazy but fortunately it's true!

This is the current and bleak image of the M62 motorway linking Liverpool to Hull which will be the watershed of the new Northern Forest a large forest corridor between the North Sea and the Irish Sea.

England before the advent of the industrial revolution was covered with lush forests mainly of oaks, but they left their place to large urban centers.
And today it is the European country with fewer woods:

only 10% of its national territory is covered by forests.

But how to remedy past mistakes?

Through an ambitious government project led by Woodland Trust, an organization that deals with the conservation of woods in the United Kingdom, with an investment of 500 million pounds, to improve the lives of citizens, combat pollution and climate change.

The forest will be 172 kilometers long and will embrace important cities such as Liverpool, Hull, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Chester.

The Northen Forest will be the green lung in the middle of the country capable of absorbing 8 million tons of CO2 alone.

This is a project that starts from the bottom up, an initiative carried out by non-governmental associations who have been working with communities and the environment for years and supported by citizens who want a greener Britain.
For the moment the British government has allocated only 5.7 million pounds while the project provides 500 million.

However in the spring the project will come to life from the 680 hectare reforestation in the town of Bolton in the county of Smithills.

What to say except that it is a wonderful project that should be an EXAMPLE for all other countries.
We must reverse the course and move towards the future by changing our way of approaching economic development which must always be more compatible with the environment.
REFORESTATION is not just about making a place more beautiful and green, it is a question of :

• combating hydrogeological instability,
• decrease the catastrophic effects of floods,
• improve air quality to counteract the fine particles.

In short, it is a question of improving the quality of life as well as new scenarios of economic and occupational development such as tourism.
