Is it true that zeros (0) were first discovered by Islamic scientis?
Islam was founded in circa 612 AD. It was not the dominant and widespread religion for some centuries. During the Golden Age of Islam, Muslims progressed considerably in mathematics and sciences after learning from the Greek and Indian (Hindu) scriptures and scholars.
Muslims used Hindu symbols, including zero, for representing and making the mathematical calculation. The ancient Babylonians, Mayans in America, Chinese and Indians had knowledge of zero or at least they had notion of 'nothingness’ in their mathematics and philosophy, much before Islam came into existence.
In India, Pingala (circa 3rd Century BC) used Sanskrit word ‘shunya’ to represent zero. Aryabhata (circa 5th century AD) used the decimal system and defined zero. Brahmagupta in 7th Century AD not only used zero in his work but also promulgated the concept of negative numbers.
Many Islamic scholars claim that Muslim scientists and mathematicians discovered zero, decimal system and modern number system but it is not based on facts. Islam is much younger compared to the ancient civilizations I mentioned above. So, it is evident that Islamic scholars didn’t discover zero or modern number system. They used it and improved it but it is sure that they had not discovered it. It was already discovered much before the birth of Prophet Mohamed. This is the reason the the modern number system is called Hindu Arabic Numeral System.
