Tumour

Generally, when we talk about a tumour we are referring to some kind of malignant process, but... nothing could be further from the truth. Not all tumors are malignant. Not all tumors are from organs such as the brain, lungs, liver or intestines.

In reality, a tumour is any type of "abnormal growth and reproduction" of the cells of our body; there are a large number of factors that could trigger these tumours. Many are linked to the genetics of the individual and many have not established a certain origin. What is certain and has been determined is that "trigger factors" such as poor nutrition, stress or other causes cause these tumour precursors to "activate" and trigger.

Today I bring you an interesting post of a tumor that we operate on the palm of the hand, although benign and painless it is uncomfortable for the manipulation of any object, so we plan your surgery.

The patient's story

At the age of 18, Carlos noticed that his right hand was bulging, not bothered, but with the passing of time it grew into a real nightmare, especially when he tried to play baseball and it was his turn to hit the bat because when the ball hit the pain was very intense.

At the age of 21, after waiting so long, Carlos decided to go to the hand surgeon's office, where he was evaluated by our team and after carrying out several functional tests to check that his hand had no problems with movement or sensitivity alterations, we decided to treat him surgically. At the time he said with some disappointment that he was very sorry to be able to shake hands with his friends, because he immediately felt their discomfort.

That word...

We told him it was a tumor, and after seeing his anguished and panicky face when we heard "that word" We explained that a tumor is not necessarily something malignant or what we commonly know as cancer, quite the contrary, in the case of him it was rather a benign lesion that if it was removed early there would be no risk of re-growth and his hand would retain all its normal functions. Once he understood, he was determined.

Let's get to work!

Two months later Carlos was nervous in a wheelchair, dressed in a surgical suit with a cap, a little bent over and submissive, when the nurse announced on the loudspeaker that it was his turn to go to the ward.

Once inside, the sleeping patient and the dressed surgeons. A horde of sterile, white, latex-covered hands approach, intimidating the naked hand with the tumor on the table. The master hand surgeon puts on his or her special magnifying lenses and observes the procedure in great detail.

The scalpel is cold, precise like one of the best machines, the movement is slow but elegant. The breath of each helper emits echoes of amazement. The light is intense but accurate, the vital signs regurgitate an orchestra in the anesthesiologist's machine and the master's lenses do not move away for a single second from the delicate procedure!

Each pause is accompanied by a movement of the assistant. There were no words to waste precious time, only with gestures you could see how the eight hands danced in sync to make a surgery of unique category.

Four months have passed since that time, and when I least expected it, a young man comes up to me and shakes his right hand with great happiness and asks me, "Do you remember my doctor? I remember shaking it so formidably, so energetically, with happiness, with pride, with enthusiasm, as if it were another hand... that I quickly answered: I remember the story of my friend Carlos!... And you? While smiling as cheerful as he was at the same time.

“If not you, then who? If not now, then when?”
