Hello! Thanks for stopping to read. My name is Sara Altuna, I am a medical oncologist trained and practicing in Venezuela, and I have the possibility of going to a world congress of oncology to present a job on behalf of a team that has fought very hard.
I trained at the UCV (Central University of Venezuela) and worked in 2 oncology units, a molecular biology laboratory and with the Anticancer Society of Venezuela. In addition, for 1 year, I am part of a group of specialists in oncology that are in all parts of the world. This group, which we baptized ONCOLLEGE, was formed in order to make the discussion of cases and scientific publications for doctors in remote areas more accessible and with little access to expert opinions.
Over time, this group grew and perfected. At the beginning of the year we considered a survey on the accessibility to diagnostic tests of overexpression and amplification of HER2 (a fundamental marker for deciding treatment behaviors) in breast cancer, as well as of the treatments aimed at this molecular alteration. An electronic survey was formulated and distributed and more than 200 specialists from around the world answered. The data obtained was perfected and published in 2 phases. It has had an impact on the conversation about precision oncology, which in some scenarios may be inaccessible, limiting availability to potentially curative cancer treatments.
For the world congress of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), we send the summary with the accessibility data to anti-HER2 treatments, and win the opportunity of a subsidy by the ESMO organizing committee, to present the findings in the form of a poster. This is called the Merit Award, or Merit Award. I, as the first author, am the one who must attend the congress to present our findings.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to go to a world oncology forum representing ONCOLLEGE and my country, as well as women in Venezuelan oncology and in Latin America. I have never been able to attend a forum of this magnitude and I have it at my fingertips, only that I still have to take a few steps to travel in peace.
I feel very fortunate to have been selected for the Merit Award, but to achieve my goal I need your help. The prize subsidy includes accommodation on the days of the congress, from September 27 to October 1 in Barcelona, ​​Spain; the entrance to the congress (not negligible), and part of the value of the air ticket. That said, I still have to raise funds for maintenance and lodging for some days that have not been contemplated (for reasons of possible flight ticket dates).
I need to raise around USD 1000 to complete the purchase amount of the ticket, as well as stay the days before and after the congress, until my flight can take me back home, where I can share what I have learned with other colleagues and implement clinical practices to the extent that the complex humanitarian emergency that we live allows.
