Astronomers Detected An Insane Eruption – Ten-Billion Times Stronger Than Sun’s

in #science5 years ago

Newly born T Tauri type stars in the binary JW 566 binary system are still gulping up matter from their vicinity and are still growing. And when they get “stuck” they are capable of firing of such a strong eruption that it shakes all of near space.

The energy of solar eruptions is counted in TNT megatons and the ejected mass is moving at speed around one million kilometers per hour – that’s 0.1 % of the speed of light. And if one hits the Earth it will start a geomagnetic storm, large auroras will appear and even our technology can get damaged. If a really strong one ever hit our planet it could cause massive and long-term blackouts all over the planet.

In other words, solar eruptions are quite serious. And now imagine an eruption ten billion times more massive than the eruptions made by our Sun. Such an eruption was recently discovered by the Hawaiian telescope JCMT that can be found on Mauna Kea. The astronomers, Steve Mairs and his coworkers from the East Asian Observatory are studying the mechanisms of star-birth. Their goal is to get more information about our own solar system.

The eruption was detected in a binary system of two newly created T Tauri stars that is known as JW 566. This binary system is about 1 300 light years away from us. The eruption lasted only a few hours on the 26th November of 2016. The scientists think this “megaeruption” was caused by a disruption of the stars gigantic magnetic field that is partly responsible for the nearby material being sucked into the still young and growing star.
