New Battery Could Provide Up To 1000 Kilometers Range For Electric Cars

One of the main limiting factors of current electric cars is their range. This “discipline” is something electric cars have almost no chance of competing with cars with a classical engine.

Many companies are working on batteries, hoping to be the ones that come with a breakthrough that could change the face of the car industry. And Innolith – a Swiss company – says they are the ones who broke through. They announced they developed the first ever rechargeable battery with an energy density of 1000 Wh/kg. With such energy density, current electric cars could feasibly drive up to a thousand kilometers per charge.

Drive further, cost less and be safer!

The longer range isn’t the only alleged benefit of this new battery technology. Because it doesn’t use any expensive or exotic materials the battery manufactures and thanks to that the consumers can expect a radical reduction in prices. Maybe now I’ll sound like a TV-salesman, but that still isn’t all the new technology promises us. The electrolyte in accumulators nowadays is organic and very flammable. Innolith claims their electrolyte is inorganic and non-flammable. Eliminating the flammable electrolyte would remove the primary reason for battery fires that could cause even the most trivial of crashes to result in death.

First in Germany, then the rest of the world!

The Innolith batteries will first appear on the market during a pilot program in Germany. Later, the technology will be licensed to other battery and car manufactures. The expected time-frame for the rest of the development and commercialization is three to five years. Though, the company is expected to keep control over all the supply of the special chemicals so they can protect their intellectual property.

The allegedly revolutionary accumulator is the result of many years of hard work of experts from the Innolith company. They primarily focused on inorganic electrolytes and their use in rechargeable batteries. The tests showed the capability to go through more than 55 thousand full recharge/charge cycles.

And to give you an idea of how this battery could change the world of electric cars – a standard Tesla Model S with fully charged batteries can drive for about 550 kilometers. But if it got the Innolith battery, it should be capable of driving for nearly a thousand kilometers on a single charge.
