Quantum Radio Needs Only The Weakest Signal

A new quantum circuit coming from the Netherlands can detect individual photons of radio waves. It will make scientists very happy.

Many of you will know the strife of listening to the radio and the signal going weak. But a similar problem exists in many other fields, for example, MRI devices that save lives in hospitals or the radio-telescopes searching for the secrets of the universe suffer from this problem as well.

But this may be coming to an end as a team of the Dutch Delft University of Technology recently built an incredible quantum circuit that is capable of receiving the weakest radio signal permitted under the principles of quantum mechanics. This quantum circuit could become the basis of many different applications in medicine, diagnostics or even radio astronomy. And even scientists who dabble in trying to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity.

Quantum mechanics provide us with many weird predictions. One of them is that energy isn’t continuous but works in quantums that are the smallest and non-divisible pieces of energy. In terms of radio waves, this would be photons. Gary Steele and his team managed to use their quantum circuit to detect individual photons – the weakest signals possible.

The quantum radio would allow us to listen to quantum vibrations of any object with mass and possibly even allow us to control them. Then we could design experiments in which we would observe what happens when we mix the effects of quantum mechanics with gravity. This certainly won’t be easy but it the quantum radio works, we could test incredible things.
