International Day of Women and Girls in Science

in #science5 years ago

11 February is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Today is the first time I realize there is an international day for girls in science, which was decided in the United Nations "Resolution adopted by the General Assembly" on 22 December 2015.

I though we wouldn't need a day to remember the important role women have on science...but it seems I'm wrong!

"Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science."

According to UNESCO data only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education.

I have a contrary perception because in Portugal there are much more women than men at the university, and I knew a few studying mathematic (according to UNESCO data Portugal have more female students in Math).

Well, as a woman in science (ecology), I hope we won't need to use a specific day in the calendar to mark our position.

I rather prefer women on science every day of the year!

These photos were shot during field work. Ok, it's with plants, but it is science!! :)
