The dense, sour smell of wet clothes is definitely annoying for many people, but have you ever wondered why freshly washed and scented clothing should stink? Is that not opposing the whole purpose?

MILDEW
The first hypothesis would be bacteria. The characteristic odor of sweat is not caused by the sweat itself, but by the bacteria on our skin. Bacteria react with sweat, skin cells and various glandular secretions to produce volatile organic compounds. It is these compounds that produce the nasty odor. The compounds adhere to our clothing and make them stink.

As a result, it could be argued that moist, wet clothing provides these bacteria with the ideal environment for living and reproduction. The conditions accelerate their growth and consequently the intensity of the stench. However in this case it is not so. Washing clothes by hand or in the washing machine effectively kills all the bacteria. The conditions are perfect, not for the growth of bacteria, but of a fungus. After washing and not well dried, the sour smell is caused by a fungus called mildew.

The smell is released by the fungus as it feeds, grows and multiplies, releasing volatile organic compounds through those steps. Mildew inhabits many organic materials or plant fibers apart from clothing, such as: leather and paper.
However, it can only thrive if only these materials are soaked in moisture. In addition to the humidity, they enjoy lower temperatures, so clothes that are washed in cold water stinks more.

How does one get rid of the smell?

Do not fold and store clothing in cupboards when they are even slightly damp. The low temperature in the closed cabinets makes the odor worse and easily detectable when worn outside later.
To prevent the appearance of mold and its characteristic odor, it is recommended to add vinegar to the mixture as it is an active disinfectant.
It is also advisable to use conditioners to aid the scent of the detergent.
Do not forget that mildew thrives in environment with low temperature, so for those who stay in such environments, ensure you wash your clothes with warm water. The use of hot water has two benefits: It kills bacteria and some fungi that can grow in your clothes.
Although it is a good precaution to adhere to, the best solution is to dry your clothes well immediately after washing.
