1-2 TRILLION GALAXIES!!

in #science6 years ago

()

IN THE fall of 2016 an international team of astrophysicists led by Christopher Conseliece, of the University of Nottingham in England, released the results of a 15 year-long research project to determine with better accuracy how many galaxies there are in the known universe. The results? A minimum of 1 trillion but more probably 2 trillion galaxies. In other words this was the best figure they could come up with and they left it rather open ended, there may be more than 2 trillion galaxies!

Now is when we all say in unison: OH MY GOD! Indeed! The human mind, at least my mind and all those whom I know, can't absorb or compute or comprehend this number. It's simply too huge. Let me try and give you some point of reference or perspective.

Our own Milky Way Galaxy is between 100,000 and 180,000 light years in diameter. In other words traveling at the speed of light (299,792,458 meters per second or 186,000 miles per second) it would take at least 100,000 YEARS to travel from one side of our galaxy to the other! And our galaxy is only modest in size. The M67 Galaxy is 980,000 light years across, and the whopper Hercules A is 1.5 million, yes million, light years in diameter!

When you look up at the stars at night what you are seeing are mostly stars within our own galaxy, however many of those bright pin points of light are actually galaxies, so distant they appear as stars to your eye.

The Hubble Telescope that orbits the earth at an altitude of 340 miles provided the majority of information aiding the international team that has calculated the number of galaxies. The Hubble Telescope is only 43.5 feet long but has opened the universe to incredible views since it's deployment in 1990. This incredible telescope is so precise it could see two fireflies ten feet apart in Tokyo from Washington DC. It has gathered light that was created 13.4 billion years ago. Hubble orbits the earth once every 95 minutes.

To date, the farthest known galaxies are 13.5 billion light years away. Let me remind you that if you could travel at the speed of 186,000 miles per second it would take you 13.5 billion years to go from earth to the farthest know boundary of our Universe. These were among the very first galaxies birthed when the Universe came into existence according to astrophysicists. The Hubble telescope focused on a distant speck of space where there was no perceivable light for 22 days to see what was out there. When the images were developed Astronomers were stunned. Thousand of galaxies were in the image. The image was named The Hubble Deep Field Image. This was in 2004. When I first saw this image in a National Geographic article about 13 years ago I was stunned. Here is that same pic. For a better image you can go to Hubble.com.

Here is another mind blowing fact. Our own galaxy is of modest size when compared to other known galaxies and has approximately 400 Billion stars. Let's say thats an average number of stars within a galaxy. So take 400 billion stars and multiply that by 2 trillion and thats a very rough guess at how many stars are out there. OH MY!

MYSTICISM MEETS PHYSICS

Mystics are simply those humans who have the capacity to sense, know and understand things which are considered mysteries. They gather their information from or through a connection to the Universal Field, or Universal Source. For instance some mystics have "seen" the Universe and have told us that it is all One Thing, that there is a pervasive Intelligence that permeates All.

Theoretical physicists have postulated there is an all-pervasive energy, or energetic substance within the entire Universe. This substance is found within each atom and is a constant oneness within all things. A most recent paper published from NASA postulates what they call a "Plasma Universe"... an electromagnetic substance that permeates all things. Gosh, it would have been so much easier had they just gone to their local mystic for such information!

I find it fascinating, however, to see science and mystical vision come to the same understanding of things.

ONE LAST COMMENT... ON ATHEISM

We humans are fascinating creatures. Once we adopt a belief as our own we are extremely reluctant to let it go. (I'm going to address this phenomenon in an upcoming post... It's more than just a function of cognitive dissonance.) Atheists, like the rest of us, have their opinions regarding a Higher Power, or God. There is none according to them. And I certainly can understand their vehement views...for the most part. However, I kind of chuckle when I hear them expound upon the subject simply because I put their opinions in perspective. Here they are, tiny miniscule specks of biological matter with some intelligence and limited consciousness passing judgement upon an entire Universe. It is rather a humorous thing actually how such an egotistical view can be held and sustained. I mean, really. It's kind of like a flea upon an elephants back proclaiming there is no elephant. The fleas view and understanding are so limited that to it there is no elephant. Nothing against atheists here, just observing a judgement passed from a very, very limited perspective.

And this brings us to the next post. Beliefs. Where they come from and how they influence us and how they entrench themselves within our awareness. Should be good.

Many Blessings,

Now you're talking my language, Christopher. Here's something interesting to blow your mind. Within this concept of "time" that we perceive in our heads, we are each like a little spec on planet earth spinning a 1,000 miles per hour, orbiting around our sun at 67,000 miles per hour. The sun is orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy somewhere in the region of 500,000 MPH, and our galaxy, as per the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite in 1989 and 1990, suggest that our galaxy is moving at 1.34 million MPH in the direction of the constellation Hydra. It sort of blows one's mind to think we are physically moving at such mind blowing speed.

Another mind boggling fact to ponder is this thing we earthlings call "Time" and how when we look up to the stars, we are actually seeing the past to varying degrees and not the present, depending on their distance. Our own sun, for example, is approximately 8.3 minutes from earth. So when we see s solar flare we are seeing what happened 8.3 minutes ago. The Nearest Star, Alpha Centauri, which is really a binary pair of stars A & B, are roughly 4.35 light years away (or ago). Sirius A & B are approx. 8.7 light years away (or in the past). And need I say scaled all the way out to if we look through the most powerful telescopes to see the farthest reaches of the universe, we can see as much as approx. 13.5 billion years ago, more or less when it is believed the universe came into being.

Even more mind blowing is how many astrophysicists have been talking about certain findings which revolve around the birkeland currents and the Electric Universe (or the Plasma Universe), and how they can make the speed of light to seem like a snail compared to a rabbit, to practically eliminate any concept of time at all. For example, while it takes 8.3 minutes for light to travel from the sun to earth, a solar flare can be instantly reacted to by certain organisms and even the human heart, as per Stanford's HeartMath Institute findings.

Lastly, mystics, shamans and such physicists as Nassim Haramein and Elizabeth Rauscher have postulated mathematical equations and award winning peer-reviewed papers to support the idea that every atom is a fractal of the entire universe. A fractal is if you break it apart as small as possible and look at one minute piece under the microscope, you will still see the whole in it.

The Mandelbrot set

It was first designed in 1978 and completed by Benoit Mandelbrot, who first saw an IBM visualization of the set in 1980. It illustrates the idea of a fractal in how you can infinitely zoom in and continue to find the same basic image over and over again.

This is the concept illustrating relatively how every atom and cell of our being, that is essentially made of star dust, is a fractal picture of the entire universe.

Love it. I found myself shaking my head in agreement. I also love the analogy of the flee on the elephant. If you don't mind I would like to use that when talking with some people.

Really in the grand scheme of it all we are very small. Even when it comes to being here on mother earth. There is so much more out there for us to discover however we need to change our beliefs about some thing so that we can discover more.

Glad you liked it. Sure, just don't tell them the flea is me! Blessings

Now, I'm thinking, that, with so many other galaxies, stars, and planets out there that we have to be pretty naive not to believe there is more intelligent life in the universe!
I think you are touching on "The String Theory" when you talk about this "Universal Field"??? Fascinating science right there!
CARRY ON!

I am fascinated with astronomy. One day, when I'm an Orca, I'm going to get myself a nice telescope. Indeed, the probability of life out there is very high. I guess if we started now we could investigate every solar system and be done with it in a few quad trillion years. As far as I understand String Theory and even Dark matter have been set aside as plausible theories. The new one is "Plasma Theory", which I have yet to look into in any depth.

Nice! I was just thinking that even the word 'science' is defined as:

the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Science then, while observing the physical and natural world, missed out on the Spiritual and all the other aspects as well. However, some treat science like a religion as well.

I love your post. Well done!

I think you are an hour ahead of PST so you must have taken an afternoon break. Thanks for popping in and making a comment. Or perhaps you came in to pick up your golf clubs and took a glance at the computer. I chuckle. I know you must feel like an Egyptian right now, you know, the kind that built the pyramids, not the supervisors. Glad you liked the post. Seem to be getting on track again. Had a girl friend visiting for a couple of months and... well, got all discombobulated. She is now 1,100 miles away so I can concentrate! Ah, yes... just me and the dogs!

hahaha. While I may feel like a slave at times, I do work hard not to be one. You know, the ones that do the j.o.b. so that they can pay their bills and do that over and over for the rest of their lives. Working hard to break that cycle that was taught to our ancestors by the Egyptians, you know, the supervisors, not the ones that built the pyramids. lol

Funny how easily distracted you are. Might want to work on that my friend. hehehe

Always good to see another @mistermercury post :)

I like how you've progressed through from outer universe to the inner one. I find that a very pertinent observation really. We can go outward so far, to the very depths of the universe - and we still don't seem to know anything! It seems to beg the question of how far can we go inside? And what is the relation between inner and outer knowledge? More on that in your next post I suspect.
Many Blessings

I appreciate your consistent commenting. My next goal for you is to become an Orca and to continue to upvote me!! I think that's a great goal. In the meantime I'll be visiting your blog and sending you a massive amount of pennies.Blessings. And, of course the post tomorrow will adequately solve all of humanities problems.

Hey! here is a great post by @maverickinvictus ( he is from Malaysia I think. Great guy). Great post on how to grapple with Steemit and make headway. Lots of good information. Blessings.

Thanks @mistermercury. I feel as if I am slowly making headway, and having a lot of fun too. Much Love

This was SO. GOOD. I can't even begin to say. You know I've always loved your "space" talk. I think that's where I inherited the deep interest in the heavens. That part about the Hubble pointed to a dark spot in the sky, I think I remember you telling me about that. And it blows my mind how much was discovered in that tiny square inch!

I am a flea here, to be sure.

I'd love to use this blog post as a nice little seque into your astrology reading on my show in two weeks. Mind if I do?

certainly my dear. Blessings.
