Calorie is the energy source the body needs to move. Everyone needs calorie intake, including children.

However, do you know how many caloric needs a child needs to meet each day?

As parents, we need to carefully calculate the child's daily caloric needs from each food and drink. The reason, excessive caloric intake may increase the risk of obesity in children.

Calories are the amount of energy in each food. The calorie needs of each child vary, depending on the age, sex, and level of physical activity of the child.

As adults age, especially in pubescent age, children need more calories to prepare their bodies for changes to maturity.

The more active the child, the more calorie intake he needs as a supply of energy during the move.

Calorie needs between boys and girls are also distinguished, although age and equally include an active child.

This is because the male body generally has a higher posture and more muscle mass than the female, thus requiring more energy to function optimally.

Not only that, men generally have a higher body metabolism as well as a larger lung capacity. This is what enables them to work harder during sports and other physical activities.

Based on Nutrition Adequacy Score that has been determined by the Ministry of Health RI through Minister of Health Regulation no. 75 Year 2013, this is the number of calories a child needs every day:

  • Age 0-6 months: 550 Kcal per day

  • 7-11 months: 725 Kcal per day

  • Age 1-3 years: 1125 Kcal per day

  • Age 4-6 years: 1600 Kcal per day

  • Age 7-9 years: 1850 Kcal per day

Beyond the age of 10, caloric needs of children begin to be differentiated by sex.

Boys

  • Age 10-12 years: 2100 Kcal per day

  • Age 13-15 years: 2475 Kcal per day

  • Age 16-18 years: 2675 Kcal per day

Girl

  • Age 10-12 years: 2000 Kcal per day

  • Age 13-15 years: 2125 Kcal per day

  • Age 16-18 years: 2125 Kcal per day

AKG's guide from Kemenkes is a common reference calorie requirement. As mentioned above, the calorie needs of each child may differ depending on the age, sex, and level of physical activity.

The next thing we need to do is adjust the daily calorie needs of food with age, gender, and how active everyday children.

Does your child play actively or tend to be lazy to move because just busy watching TV or playing games?

What are the best sources of calories for child growth?

Almost every food and drink contains calories. Basically, calories are the result of a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that then processed the body into energy.

To find out how many calories are contained in the food, we can read the nutritional value information label on the food packaging.

On the label listed all the required information, including the amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

Even so, we still must be wise to choose which source of good calories to grow children. We also need to limit the portion of our daily intake.

So, choose a good source of carbohydrates, protein, and fats for the growth of children, such as:

  • Sources of carbohydrates: potatoes, pasta, rice, whole wheat bread

  • Milk and dairy products are low in fat

  • Protein sources: meat, fish, eggs, and nuts

  • Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber

Make sure that your baby does not eat too much sweet or fatty foods, like candy, cookies, fast food, or soft drinks.

These foods contain high calories, but low nutritional content.

However, calories are not the only nutrients that need to be met if you want your baby to stay healthy.

Make sure that the child's diet contains good balanced nutrition for growth and development.

In addition, encourage your child to exercise while playing to burn excess calories in his body.

The more calories that enter the body, the intensity of physical activity should also be increased to prevent calories buried into fat.

Great info! Ive often wondered this. I have a 3 year old princess. Shes definitely more of a grazer. She doesnt sit and eat an entire meal at once like some children. She will about half and come back about an hour later and finish. She also doesnt wake up hungry... Im also like this! She doesnt normally eat a single thing until around noon and then she grazes throughout the day. Sometimes I wonder if shes getting enough... other times I wonder if shes getting too much! All in all, she eats pretty healthy for a 3 year old. Bunch of fruits and whole grain when she has bread or crackers. Only a bit of juice and water for drinks.

Great info! Thanks for sharing
