Siberian Meteorite Was Hiding A Mineral Never Before Seen On Earth

in #science6 years ago

When gold seekers in Russia found an unusual yellowish rock that thought it might have some gold in it. While they were wrong about that, they found something much more valuable – a mineral never seen before.

This mineral was unofficially named uakitite (after the area where it was found) and even in the meteorite there was very little of it. Not even enough for a proper analysis which is the reasons why we don’t have that much information about its physical and optical attributes. But that doesn’t mean we know nothing about it.

Scientists managed to figure out that it is somewhat structurally similar to another two “space minerals”: carslbergite and osbornite. All of these are nitrites – binary compounds of nitrogen with another element. Using electron diffraction the scientists also got structural data of the uakitite crystals and “added” them on a model of vanadium nitrite. This allowed them to deduce some of uakitite’s physical properties. For example it is most likely light gray colored with a hint of pink and his hardness is about 9 or 10 based of the Mohs hardness scale.
