Stimulation Of The Brain Can Relieve Depression Symptoms

in #science5 years ago

A few minutes of stimulating the lateral orbitofrontal cortex with weak electric pulses has immediately improved the mood of people with depression symptoms.

Making such stimulation isn’t easy. But in this case, it was a bit easier as the study was performed by 25 people who already had wires in their brains because of heavy epilepsy. The lateral orbitofrontal cortex is one of parts of the brain that are used for complex thinking. And it has already been linked with depression several years ago.

Though, using this to treat depression isn’t ideal. The fact that it requires a very invasive procedure – brain surgery – makes it dangerous in its own right. The second problem is the fact that shortly after the neurostimulation ended the mood of the patients worsened again. On the other hand, no side effects were detected.

Thus the main benefit of this is that it provides us with more information of how a brain affected by depression works and how we could potentially treat it
